But now that you have made a decision to go into the satisfying field of healthcare, just how do you go about choosing the right school and program so that you will get the appropriate training to become a skilled professional? And considering that most states do require that x-ray technicians become licensed, based on where you ultimately work you may require training to pass a licensing test. So it’s essential that you assess each of the schools you are looking at in order to evaluate each program. Many potential students start by searching for colleges or technical schools that are within driving distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and often settle on the most affordable cost. But while cost and location need to be taken into consideration, there are additional important qualifications as well. For example, you need to ask if the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internship programs. These inquiries and others you must ask the schools you are evaluating are presented later in this post. But first, let’s explore what a x-ray technician does and the degrees and training choices that are available.

Radiology Technician Work Summary

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, they all have the identical fundamental job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many choose to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for instance mammography. They may work in Big Flats NY clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment plus regularly analyze its functionality and safety. They are also required to retain detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Big Flats NY health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Technician Degrees Offered

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally requires 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be acceptable as well. Something to bear in mind is that Big Flats NY radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification mandates in New York or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, based on the state where you will be working you might have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites vary so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number approve other alternatives for testing also. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many Big Flats NY employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Big Flats 14814As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree programs. So even though you can still obtain your degree online, a large portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is often provided in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Big Flats NY residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually find that the online approach to education is much more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are generally less expensive than traditional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just make sure that the online school you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the best choice for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Colleges

As soon as you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of looking for and assessing Big Flats NY x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and secondary expenses will be a determining factor also. But along with cost and location, what else should you look at when comparing schools? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? Most xray tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Big Flats NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the New York xray technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Big Flats NY medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Big Flats NY healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Big Flats NY residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Big Flats NY colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Big Flats NY, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Desire to Be a Radiology Technician?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's important to review questions you might be asked. One of the questions that interviewers often ask radiographer candidates is "What made you pick radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to learn is not merely the private reasons you may have for being a radiology technician, but also what qualities and abilities you possess that make you outstanding at your profession. You will undoubtedly be asked questions pertaining primarily to radiography, along with a certain number of typical interview questions, so you need to organize some strategies about how you want to address them. Considering there are so many factors that go into choosing a career, you can answer this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When formulating an answer, try to include the reasons the work appeals to you as well as the strengths you possess that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the ideal choice for the job. Don't try to memorize an answer, but jot down a few concepts and talking points that relate to your personal experiences and strengths. Going over sample responses can help you to prepare your own concepts, and inspire ideas of what to discuss to enthuse the recruiter.
