Rimersburg PA x-ray tech internship programCongratulations on your career choice to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Rimersburg PA in order to train to be a radiologic technologist. And now that you have made a decision to go into the satisfying field of healthcare, just how do you set about selecting the right school and program so that you will receive the appropriate training to become a qualified practitioner? And considering that most states do mandate that x-ray technicians become licensed, depending on where you ultimately practice you might need preparation to pass a licensing test. So it’s essential that you investigate each of the colleges you are considering in order to compare each program. A number of prospective students begin by looking for colleges or technical schools that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they compare tuition and often settle on the lowest cost. But while location and cost must be taken into consideration, there are additional significant qualifiers also. For instance, you should ask if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internships. These questions and others you must ask the schools you are reviewing are provided later in this article. But first, let’s explore what a x-ray technician does and the credentials and training options that are offered.

X-Ray Tech Career Summary

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the same primary job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some elect to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for example mammography. They may work in Rimersburg PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and frequently assess its functionality and safety. They are also expected to keep complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Rimersburg PA health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Tech Degrees Available

x-ray machine in Rimersburg PAThe primary prerequisite for enrolling in an x-ray tech school is to have attained a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate as well. Something to consider is that Rimersburg PA radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Pennsylvania or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an Radiologist college, based on the state where you will be practicing you might need to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many approve additional alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, many Rimersburg PA employers favor hiring radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Rimersburg 16248As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree colleges. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a significant portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is often performed in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Rimersburg PA home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online style of education is much more practical with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less expensive than on-campus options. Along with lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just make certain that the online program you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

What to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

Once you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of looking for and evaluating Rimersburg PA x-ray technician schools. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a material factor also. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Rimersburg PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the Pennsylvania xray tech programs you are reviewing have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Rimersburg PA medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Rimersburg PA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Rimersburg PA home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Rimersburg PA colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the radiographer  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Rimersburg PA, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Become a Radiology Technician?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to consider questions you may be asked. Among the things that interviewers often ask radiographer applicants is "What compelled you to decide on radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is hoping to uncover is not merely the personal reasons you might have for being an Xray technician, but also what characteristics and talents you possess that make you outstanding at your profession. You will undoubtedly be asked questions pertaining specifically to radiography, in addition to a certain number of standard interview questions, so you should ready a number of strategies about how you would like to respond to them. Given that there are numerous variables that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this primary question in a variety of ways. When preparing an answer, try to include the reasons the profession interests you along with the strengths you possess that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the leading choice for the job. Don't attempt to memorize an answer, but jot down a few ideas and anecdotes that relate to your personal strengths and experiences. Reading through sample answers can help you to formulate your own concepts, and provide ideas of what to include to wow the interviewer.
