X-Ray Technician Job Summary
There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many choose to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They can work in Pomeroy WA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:
- Traditional and specialized X-Rays
- Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Sonography or ultrasound
- Fluoroscopy
Radiographers must maintain their equipment and regularly analyze its performance and safety. They are also required to retain in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Pomeroy WA health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.
Radiology Tech Degrees Offered
The primary requirement for enrolling in a radiology tech college is to have earned a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more expansive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable also. Something to consider is that Pomeroy WA radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Washington or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.
Radiographer Certification and Licensing
Once you have graduated from an Radiologist program, based on the state where you will be working you may need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so contact your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several offer additional alternatives for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, numerous Pomeroy WA employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.
Online Radiology Tech Programs
As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your online degree, a considerable portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is often performed in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Pomeroy WA residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online approach to education is far more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less expensive than on-campus options. Along with reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then online classes may be the best choice for you.
What to Ask Radiographer Programs
Once you have decided on the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of locating and evaluating Pomeroy WA x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to determine if you want to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are assessing.
Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Pomeroy WA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.
Are Internships Provided? Ask if the Washington radiology tech schools you are interested in have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Pomeroy WA medical community and help with job placement.
Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the radiographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pomeroy WA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.
Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Pomeroy WA home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.
What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Pomeroy WA colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program also.
Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the x-ray tech college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Pomeroy WA, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
Why Did You Decide to Be an X-Ray Tech?
When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to reflect on questions you could be asked. One of the questions that interviewers often ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to pick radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to learn is not just the private reasons you may have for being an X-Ray tech, but additionally what characteristics and abilities you have that make you outstanding at what you do. You will likely be asked questions relating exclusively to radiography, as well as a certain number of typical interview questions, so you should ready a number of approaches about how you would like to respond to them. Given that there are several factors that go into choosing a career, you can answer this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but jot down several concepts and talking points that relate to your personal strengths and experiences. Some Background on Pomeroy Washington
Pomeroy, Washington
Pomeroy is a city in Garfield County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,425 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of and only city in Garfield County.[5]
Pomeroy is located at 46°28′24″N 117°35′53″W / 46.47333°N 117.59806°W / 46.47333; -117.59806 (46.473334, -117.598119).[6]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.78 square miles (4.61 km2), all of it land.[1]
The Nez Perce trail existed in the area before history was recorded, and the first written record of caucasians passing through the area were Lewis and Clark in 1805. Captain Benjamin Bonneville also passed through the future site of the town while he was surveying for the US government in 1834. In 1860, an Irish settler named Parson Quinn settled just east of present-day Pomeroy, and lived there for the next 40 years. Rancher Joseph M. Pomeroy purchased the land in 1864,[7] and platted the town's site in May 1878.[8]
Pomeroy was officially incorporated on February 3, 1886. The town has been the seat of Garfield County since 1882, despite fierce competition in the 1880s with neighboring towns Pataha and Asotin. The struggle to name a county seat would continue through both houses of the Washington Territorial Legislature in 1883, to Governor William A. Newell of the Washington Territory, and eventually reached the Congress in 1884.[7]
