Radiology Technician Work Description

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the identical fundamental job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some choose to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for example mammography. They can practice in Wolfe City TX hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and also frequently assess its performance and safety. They are also required to retain in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Wolfe City TX medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees Available

x-ray machine in Wolfe City TXThe basic prerequisite for enrolling in an x-ray tech school is to have earned a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to finish and is more extensive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be acceptable also. One thing to bear in mind is that Wolfe City TX radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may frequently be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Texas or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an Radiologist college, depending on the state where you will be employed you may need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several offer other options for testing also. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, many Wolfe City TX employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every 2 years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Wolfe City 75496As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So while you can still earn your online degree, a substantial amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is typically conducted in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Wolfe City TX home. Students who keep working while earning their degree often find that the online approach to learning is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are often cheaper than on-campus options. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just make sure that the online school you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the best choice for you.

Questions to Ask Radiographer Programs

Once you have selected the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of searching for and evaluating Wolfe City TX x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be an important factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you factor in when comparing colleges? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these important details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of radiology tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Wolfe City TX employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the Texas radiology technician programs you are interested in have associations with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Wolfe City TX health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Wolfe City TX healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Wolfe City TX home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Wolfe City TX colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Wolfe City TX, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
