Radiology Technician Work Summary

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, each has the same fundamental job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many choose to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for instance mammography. They can work in Staatsburg NY clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays

Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, normally requires 18 months to two years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as four years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are appropriate as well. Something to keep in mind is that Staatsburg NY radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can typically be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in New York or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, based on the state where you will be working you might need to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many accept other alternatives for testing as well. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. However, many Staatsburg NY employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it could improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technologist Schools

Students who keep working while obtaining their degree usually discover that the online style of learning is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than conventional options. In addition to lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just be sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the best choice for you.

Subjects to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

After you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of searching for and evaluating Staatsburg NY x-ray technician schools. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining variable also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you consider when evaluating schools? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Staatsburg NY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the New York radiology tech colleges you are interested in have relationships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Staatsburg NY health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the radiographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Staatsburg NY healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Staatsburg NY residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Staatsburg NY colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Staatsburg NY, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Some Background on Staatsburg New York

Staatsburg, New York

Staatsburg is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Hyde Park, a town in Dutchess County, New York. The population was 377 at the 2010 census.[1] It is part of the Poughkeepsie–Newburgh–Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area as well as the larger New York–Newark–Bridgeport, NY-NJ-CT-PA Combined Statistical Area.

Staatsburg is located in the northwestern corner of Hyde Park and is bordered on the west by the Hudson River.

Staatsburg was part of the Pawling-Staats land patent, one of many granted by the English colonial government in the 1690s with the intention of encouraging more colonials to settle in the sparsely populated Hudson Valley. The original patent was made to Henry Pawling.[2] Subsequently, a large portion of the patent was purchased by Dr. Samuel Staats, a surgeon of Dutch origins who resided in New York City.[3] He and Dirck Vanderburgh bought it for 130 pounds from Pawling's widow. As a result of the combination of their names the area came to be known as "Staatsburgh".[4] The concluding "h" in the name appears to have been dropped in 1890 as part of the United States Board on Geographic Names' standardization efforts.[5]

Staatsburg is located at 41°51′10″N 73°55′20″W / 41.852772°N 73.922102°W / 41.852772; -73.922102.[6] According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.1 square miles (2.8 km2), all land.[1]

Staatsburg is bordered to the southwest by Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park. There are many scenic views of the Hudson River, making it attractive for camping, walking, hiking, jogging and cycling. Tent sites and cabins are available. Campers with boats have river access through a marina. The park is easily accessible from US 9 and the New York State Thruway (cross the Kingston–Rhinecliff Bridge).
