But while location and cost must be taken into consideration, there are other important qualifications also. For instance, you need to ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internship programs. These inquiries and others you should ask the schools you are evaluating are provided later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what a radiology tech does and the degrees and training choices that are offered.

Radiology Technician Job Description

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, they all have the same fundamental job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some elect to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They may practice in Oaks PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and frequently assess its performance and safety. They are also required to keep detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Oaks PA health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Tech Degree Options

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be appropriate also. One thing to consider is that Oaks PA radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may typically be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which a large number of schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an Radiologist school, based on the state where you will be practicing you might need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements differ so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many offer additional alternatives for testing also. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Oaks PA employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technologist Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Oaks 19456As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree colleges. So even though you can still earn your online degree, a considerable portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is typically carried out in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Oaks PA residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online approach to education is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online programs are generally less costly than on-campus options. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just be sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online school may be the best choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

As soon as you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of looking for and evaluating Oaks PA x-ray tech schools. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a determining variable also. But along with cost and location, what more should you consider when evaluating colleges? Well, you should check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of xray technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Oaks PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the Pennsylvania radiology technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Oaks PA health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Oaks PA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Oaks PA home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Oaks PA schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Oaks PA, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Want to Become a Radiologic Technologist?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's advantageous to review questions you may be asked. Among the questions that hiring managers frequently ask radiographer applicants is "What compelled you to decide on radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is hoping to discover is not merely the personal reasons you may have for being an Xray technician, but also what characteristics and abilities you have that make you good at what you do. You will probably be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, as well as a significant number of typical interview questions, so you need to prepare several strategies about how you want to address them. Because there are several factors that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When preparing an answer, aim to include the reasons the profession appeals to you as well as the strengths you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the ideal candidate for the position. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but take down a few ideas and topics that relate to your personal experiences and strengths. Reviewing sample responses can help you to develop your own thoughts, and provide ideas of what to include to impress the recruiter.
