Questions to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

As soon as you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of finding and assessing Leesport PA x-ray tech schools. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be relevant. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a determining factor also. But along with location and cost, what else should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? Most xray technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Leesport PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the Pennsylvania radiology tech schools you are evaluating have relationships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Leesport PA medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Leesport PA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Leesport PA residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Leesport PA schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the x-ray tech  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Leesport PA, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
