Radiology Tech Degree Options
The standard prerequisite for attending a radiology tech school is to have earned a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to finish and is more expansive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate as well. Something to consider is that Harrisville RI radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can typically be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Rhode Island or the state you will be working as applicable.
X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing
Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be working you may need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many offer other alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many Harrisville RI employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.
Online Radiology Technologist Degrees
As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree programs. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a considerable portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is typically performed in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online segment of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Harrisville RI home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online style of education is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than traditional options. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the best option for you.
Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges
As soon as you have chosen the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of looking for and assessing Harrisville RI x-ray technician schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be an important factor as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you factor in when comparing schools? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are reviewing.
Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of xray technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Harrisville RI employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.
Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the Rhode Island xray tech colleges you are reviewing have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Harrisville RI health care community and assist with obtaining employment.
Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Harrisville RI healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.
Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Harrisville RI residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.
How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Harrisville RI schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program also.
Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the x-ray tech program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Harrisville RI, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
