  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally takes 18 months to two years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are acceptable as well. Something to keep in mind is that Boydton VA radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may typically be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Virginia or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, based on the state where you will be working you might need to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so check with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several approve additional alternatives for testing also. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Boydton VA employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technologist Classes

This is the same for online degree schools. So although you can still earn your degree online, a large amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is often provided in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online section of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Boydton VA home. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually find that the online style of education is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than conventional alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just confirm that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the best option for you.

Points to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

When you have chosen the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of looking for and assessing Boydton VA x-ray technician schools. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be an important variable also. But along with location and cost, what else should you look at when comparing schools? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? Most xray technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Boydton VA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the Virginia xray technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Boydton VA medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Boydton VA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Boydton VA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Boydton VA schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the radiographer  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Boydton VA, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's advantageous to consider questions you may be asked. One of the things that hiring managers often ask radiographer prospects is "What compelled you to decide on radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to uncover is not only the personal reasons you may have for being a radiology technician, but also what characteristics and abilities you possess that make you outstanding at your profession. You will undoubtedly be asked questions pertaining primarily to radiography, in addition to a significant number of typical interview questions, so you should organize some ideas about how you would like to respond to them. Given that there are several factors that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a number of ways. When readying an answer, attempt to include the reasons the profession appeals to you along with the abilities you possess that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the leading candidate for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize a response, but jot down several ideas and anecdotes that relate to your own strengths and experiences.
