Next, they compare tuition and frequently gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while location and cost need to be taken into consideration, there are additional significant qualifiers as well. For example, you need to find out if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internships. These inquiries and others you must ask the schools you are considering are provided later in this article. But first, let’s talk about what a x-ray tech does and the degrees and education choices that are available.

Radiology Tech Job Summary

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, they all have the identical primary job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some choose to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for instance mammography. They may practice in Winsted CT hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and regularly analyze its performance and safety. They are additionally required to retain in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Winsted CT medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Tech Degrees Available

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to bear in mind is that Winsted CT radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Connecticut or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an Radiologist program, depending on the state where you will be employed you might have to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their requirements differ so check with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number offer other options for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Winsted CT employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Winsted 06098As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree colleges. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is typically performed in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Winsted CT residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree usually discover that the online approach to learning is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are generally cheaper than conventional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just make certain that the online program you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the best choice for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Schools

Once you have selected the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of finding and evaluating Winsted CT x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Winsted CT health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the Connecticut xray tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Winsted CT healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Winsted CT healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Winsted CT home. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Winsted CT schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Winsted CT, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Want to Be an Xray Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's a good idea to review questions you may be asked. One of the questions that hiring managers often ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to pick radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to learn is not merely the private reasons you may have for being a radiology technician, but additionally what attributes and talents you possess that make you good at what you do. You will probably be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, in addition to a certain number of typical interview questions, so you should organize a number of approaches about how you would like to respond to them. Because there are several factors that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When preparing an answer, try to include the reasons the profession appeals to you as well as the abilities you possess that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the best choice for the job. Don't try to memorize an answer, but jot down some concepts and anecdotes that pertain to your personal strengths and experiences. Reading through sample responses can help you to prepare your own thoughts, and give you ideas of what to include to impress the interviewer.

Manufactured products started with scythes at the Winsted Manufacturing Company in 1792. Winsted, along with New Haven, Connecticut, was a center for the production of mechanical clocks in the 1900s.
