Radiology Technician Work Description

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, they all have the identical fundamental job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some elect to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for instance mammography. They can work in Beaumont TX clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and regularly evaluate its functionality and safety. They are also expected to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Beaumont TX medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Technician Degree Options

Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to complete and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate also. One thing to consider is that Beaumont TX radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may frequently be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Texas or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may have to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so check with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but a number offer other alternatives for testing as well. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, many Beaumont TX employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technologist Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Beaumont 77701As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree programs. So even though you can still earn your online degree, a large amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is usually performed in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Beaumont TX home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online style of learning is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than traditional options. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just confirm that the online school you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

After you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of locating and evaluating Beaumont TX x-ray tech schools. You will also need to determine if you want to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and secondary expenses will be an important variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you factor in when reviewing colleges? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of radiology technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Beaumont TX employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the Texas radiology technician colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Beaumont TX medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Beaumont TX healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Beaumont TX home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Beaumont TX schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Beaumont TX, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Decide to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to reflect on questions you could be asked. One of the questions that interviewers often ask radiographer prospects is "What drove you to decide on radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not just the personal reasons you may have for becoming a radiology technician, but also what attributes and talents you have that make you exceptional at what you do. You will likely be asked questions relating primarily to radiography, along with a significant number of general interview questions, so you must ready a number of approaches about how you would like to respond to them. Since there are numerous variables that go into choosing a career, you can address this primary question in a number of ways. When preparing an answer, attempt to include the reasons the work appeals to you along with the strengths you have that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the ideal candidate for the job. Don't try to memorize a response, but jot down a few concepts and anecdotes that pertain to your personal strengths and experiences. Reviewing sample answers can assist you to formulate your own thoughts, and give you ideas of what to include to impress the interviewer.

Some Background on Beaumont Texas

Beaumont, Texas

Beaumont (/ˈboʊmɒnt/ BOH-mont) is a city in and the county seat of Jefferson County, Texas in the United States,[4] within the Beaumont–Port Arthur Metropolitan Statistical Area. Located in Southeast Texas on the Neches River about 90 mi (140 km) east of Houston, Beaumont city had a population of 118,296 at the time of the 2010 census, making it the twenty-fourth-most populous city in the state of Texas.

Beaumont was founded as a town in 1835 by Northerners. The early European-American settlement had an economy based on the development of lumber, farming, and port industries. In 1892, Joseph Eloi Broussard opened the first commercially successful rice mill in the state, stimulating development of rice farming in the area; he also started an irrigation company (since 1933 established as the Lower Neches Valley Authority) to support rice culture. Rice became an important commodity crop in Texas, and is now cultivated in 23 counties.[5]

A big change occurred in 1901 with the Spindletop gusher, which demonstrated the potential of the huge oil field. With Spindletop, several energy companies developed in Beaumont, and some continue. The area rapidly developed as one of the major petro-chemical refining areas in the country. Along with Port Arthur and Orange, Beaumont forms the Golden Triangle, a major industrial area on the Texas Gulf Coast.

Beaumont is home of Lamar University, a national Carnegie Doctoral Research university with 14,966 students, including undergraduates and post graduates. Over the years, several corporations have been based in this city, including Gulf States Utilities which had its headquarters in Beaumont until its takeover by Entergy Corporation in 1993. GSU's Edison Plaza headquarters is still the tallest building in Beaumont (as of 2017).

In 1824 Noah and Nancy Tevis settled on the west bank of the Neches River and developed a farm. Soon after that, a small community grew up around the farm, which was named Tevis Bluff or Neches River Settlement.[6] In 1835 the land of Tevis, together with the nearby community of Santa Anna (in total, 50 acres (20 ha)), was purchased by Northerners Henry Millard (1796?–1844) of New York,[7] Joseph Pulsifer (1805–1861) of Massachusetts,[8] and Thomas Byers Huling (1804–1865) of Pennsylvania .[9] They began planning a town to be laid out on this land.[6] Their partnership, J.P. Pulsifer and Company, controlled the first 50 acres (200,000 m2) upon which the town was founded.[8] This town was named Beaumont, after Jefferson Beaumont, the brother-in-law of Henry Millard. They added more property for a total of 200 acres.
