And since the majority of states do require that radiology technicians become licensed, based on where you subsequently work you might need preparation to pass a licensing exam. So it’s important that you research each of the schools you are considering in order to evaluate each program. Most potential students start by looking for colleges or technical schools that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they check tuition and usually gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while location and cost need to be considered, there are additional important qualifications as well. For example, you should find out if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internships. These inquiries and others you should ask the schools you are reviewing are provided later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a radiology tech does and the credentials and education choices that are offered.

Radiology Technician Job Summary

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the identical fundamental job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some choose to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, such as mammography. They can work in Friendship WI clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and also frequently assess its functionality and safety. They are also expected to retain complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Friendship WI health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish and is more expansive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate also. One thing to consider is that Friendship WI radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Wisconsin or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might need to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so check with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number approve additional alternatives for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. However, numerous Friendship WI employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it may improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technician Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Friendship 53934As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree programs. So while you can still obtain your online degree, a large portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is typically provided in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Friendship WI home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online style of learning is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online schools are often less expensive than on-campus options. In addition to lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just be sure that the online school you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Schools

When you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of locating and assessing Friendship WI x-ray tech schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a material factor also. But along with location and cost, what more should you factor in when reviewing colleges? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details before you make your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of xray technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Friendship WI employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the Wisconsin radiology technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Friendship WI health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Friendship WI healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Friendship WI residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Friendship WI colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Friendship WI, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Choose to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to reflect on questions you could be asked. One of the questions that recruiters typically ask radiographer candidates is "What made you pick radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to uncover is not just the personal reasons you may have for becoming an X-Ray tech, but additionally what characteristics and talents you have that make you good at what you do. You will likely be asked questions pertaining primarily to radiography, as well as a significant number of routine interview questions, so you must organize some approaches about how you want to answer them. Given that there are so many variables that go into selecting a career, you can answer this primary question in a number of ways. When readying an answer, try to include the reasons the work appeals to you as well as the talents you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the ideal choice for the job. Don't try to memorize a response, but take down several ideas and topics that relate to your personal experiences and strengths. Reviewing sample responses can help you to formulate your own thoughts, and inspire ideas of what to discuss to enthuse the recruiter.
