They may work in Maple Plain MN hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more extensive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be appropriate also. One thing to keep in mind is that Maple Plain MN radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can typically be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Minnesota or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many accept additional options for testing also. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. However, many Maple Plain MN employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Clinical training is typically performed in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Maple Plain MN home. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically discover that the online approach to education is far more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are often less expensive than conventional alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiographer Schools

When you have selected the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of searching for and assessing Maple Plain MN x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to decide if you want to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be an important factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you consider when comparing colleges? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details before you make your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of xray technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Maple Plain MN health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the Minnesota radiology tech programs you are reviewing have partnerships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Maple Plain MN health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the radiographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Maple Plain MN healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Maple Plain MN home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Maple Plain MN schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Maple Plain MN, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Decide to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to consider questions you may be asked. One of the questions that recruiters frequently ask radiographer prospects is "What drove you to pick radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is hoping to uncover is not just the personal reasons you may have for being a radiology technician, but also what qualities and talents you have that make you good at your profession. You will undoubtedly be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, as well as a certain number of general interview questions, so you must ready some strategies about how you want to respond to them. Considering there are numerous variables that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a variety of ways. When formulating an answer, try to include the reasons the work interests you in addition to the strengths you have that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the ideal candidate for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but write down some ideas and topics that pertain to your own experiences and strengths.
