Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, usually requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more extensive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be appropriate also. One thing to consider is that Elk River MN radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Minnesota or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist school, depending on the state where you will be employed you might have to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so contact your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but many offer additional options for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Elk River MN employers favor hiring radiology techs that are certified so it might improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just make certain that the online program you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

When you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of finding and assessing Elk River MN x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a material factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you consider when reviewing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these important details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of xray tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Elk River MN employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the Minnesota radiology tech colleges you are interested in have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Elk River MN medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Elk River MN healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Elk River MN residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Elk River MN schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the x-ray tech  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Elk River MN, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Some Background on Elk River Minnesota

Elk River, Minnesota

Elk River is a city in Sherburne County, Minnesota, United States (U.S.), about 34 miles northwest of Minneapolis. It is situated at the confluence of the Mississippi and Elk Rivers. The population was 22,974 at the 2010 census.[6] It is the county seat. The city's population exceeded 20,000 as of year 2005.[7] U.S. Highways 10 and 169 and State Highway 101 are three of the main routes in Elk River, and a station on the Northstar Commuter Rail line to downtown Minneapolis is located in the city. Elk River is located 33.2 miles northwest of Minneapolis and 37.4 miles southeast of St. Cloud.

The hardwood-forested hills in which Elk River is situated were pushed up by the last glacier that advanced across Minnesota. These hills are made up of coarse materials which is the reason gravel mining is so prevalent in Elk River, and also the reason much of the area is not considered good farmland.

To the south of Elk River lies the prairie. This natural boundary between the prairie and woods was also a boundary between Indian nations. Two battles between the Dakota and Ojibwe took place where the Elk River meets the Mississippi in 1772 and 1773.

Zebulon Pike passed through the area on his 1805 exploration of the upper Mississippi River and named the Elk River after the herds of elk he saw in the area. David Frederic Faribault, son of French-Canadian fur trader Jean-Baptiste Faribault built a trading post near the conjunction of the Elk and Mississippi Rivers in 1846, which he later sold to Pierre Bottineau. The two rivers and the Red River Trail, which passed nearby, made this area a good location for commerce.

In 1851, Ard Godfrey, a native of Orono, Maine, saw the potential of the water power of the Elk River and built a dam and a sawmill. His dam created the first lobe of Lake Orono (called the Mill Pond), which extended from the present day dam to Orono Cemetery Point. In 1855, the area by the dam was platted and the town of Orono (known as Upper Town) was created.
