  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more expansive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be acceptable also. Something to keep in mind is that Easton MN radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Minnesota or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, depending on the state where you will be working you might need to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several approve additional options for testing as well. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. However, numerous Easton MN employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technician Colleges

This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your degree online, a large portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is often performed in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Easton MN residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online approach to learning is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are often cheaper than conventional alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just make certain that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the best option for you.

Subjects to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

After you have decided on the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of searching for and assessing Easton MN x-ray technician schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details before you make your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of radiology technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Easton MN health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the Minnesota xray technician colleges you are interested in have associations with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Easton MN medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Easton MN healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Easton MN home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Easton MN schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Easton MN, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
