Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, normally requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to complete and is more expansive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be acceptable as well. Something to consider is that Clear Lake MN radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Minnesota or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may have to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several offer additional alternatives for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, many Clear Lake MN employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

However the online segment of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Clear Lake MN home. Students who continue working while earning their degree often find that the online approach to learning is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online programs are often less expensive than on-campus options. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just make sure that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

As soon as you have chosen the type of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of finding and assessing Clear Lake MN x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a material variable also. But along with location and cost, what else should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you should check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of xray tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Clear Lake MN health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the Minnesota radiology tech programs you are assessing have associations with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Clear Lake MN medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the radiographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Clear Lake MN healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Clear Lake MN home. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Clear Lake MN schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the radiographer  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Clear Lake MN, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
