They can also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, each has the identical fundamental job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some elect to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They can work in Jonesboro LA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

Radiology Technician Degrees Offered

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, generally takes 18 months to two years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be acceptable as well. One thing to bear in mind is that Jonesboro LA radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Louisiana or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements differ so contact your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several approve additional alternatives for testing also. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. However, numerous Jonesboro LA employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it may increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Programs

This is the same for online degree schools. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a considerable portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is typically carried out in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online portion of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Jonesboro LA home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree usually find that the online style of learning is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online programs are often less expensive than conventional options. Along with lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

After you have decided on the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of looking for and evaluating Jonesboro LA x-ray technician schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a determining factor also. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details before you make your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of xray technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Jonesboro LA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the Louisiana xray tech colleges you are interested in have relationships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Jonesboro LA healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Jonesboro LA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Jonesboro LA residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Jonesboro LA schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the radiographer  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Jonesboro LA, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to review questions you might be asked. What the interviewer is hoping to discover is not merely the personal reasons you might have for being an X-Ray tech, but additionally what characteristics and skills you possess that make you outstanding at what you do. Some Background on Jonesboro Louisiana

Jonesboro, Louisiana

Jonesboro is a town in and the parish seat of Jackson Parish in the northern portion of the U.S. state of Louisiana.[3] The population was 3,914 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Ruston Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Jonesboro was an industrial mill town, founded in the early 20th century in northern Louisiana. During the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, whites violently resisted African-American efforts to gain their constitutional rights as citizens, even after passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Ku Klux Klan, which was active in the area, conducted what was called a "reign of terror" in 1964, including harassment of activists, "the burning of crosses on the lawns of African-American voters," murder, and destroying five black churches by fire, as well as their Masonic hall, and a Baptist center.[4][5]

In November 1964 leaders Earnest "Chilly Willy" Thomas and Frederick Douglass Kirkpatrick, the latter ordained that year as a minister of the Church of God in Christ), founded the Deacons for Defense and Justice in Jonesboro. It was an armed self-defense group, made up of mostly mature men who were veterans of World War II and the Korean War. At night, they conducted regular patrols of the black community in the city, which occupied an area known as "the Quarters."[5][4] They protected civil rights activists and their families during and outside demonstrations. At the request of activists in Bogalusa, Louisiana, another mill town where blacks were under pressure by violent whites, Thomas and Kirkpatrick helped found an affiliated chapter in that city.[5] Ultimately there were 21 chapters in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, operating through 1968. In Jonesboro, the Deacons achieved some changes, such as integrating parks and a swimming pool. Activists achieved more after congressional passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and their entry into politics.

Jonesboro is located at 32°14′23″N 92°42′41″W / 32.23972°N 92.71139°W / 32.23972; -92.71139 (32.239611, -92.711501).[6] According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.9 square miles (13 km2), of which 4.8 square miles (12 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) (0.82%) is water.

The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Jonesboro has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.[7]
