Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, usually takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are appropriate also. One thing to keep in mind is that Tipton IA radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may typically be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Iowa or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be working you might have to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several offer other alternatives for testing also. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is optional. However, numerous Tipton IA employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Schools

So even though you can still obtain your degree online, a significant portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is usually conducted in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Tipton IA residence. Plus online colleges are generally more affordable than on-campus alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just make certain that the online college you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

Once you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of looking for and assessing Tipton IA x-ray technician schools. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be relevant. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining factor also. But along with location and cost, what more should you consider when evaluating schools? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Tipton IA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the Iowa radiology technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Tipton IA health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the radiographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Tipton IA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Tipton IA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Tipton IA schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Tipton IA, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to consider questions you might be asked.
