These questions and others you should ask the schools you are reviewing are provided later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what a radiology tech does and the credentials and training options that are available.

Regardless of the name, each has the identical major job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. They can work in Malabar FL hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

  • Fluoroscopy

Radiology Technician Degrees Offered

x-ray machine in Malabar FLThe basic requirement for attending a radiology tech school is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as four years to finish and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are appropriate as well. One thing to consider is that Malabar FL radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may frequently be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Florida or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, based on the state where you will be employed you may need to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number offer additional options for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Malabar FL employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Malabar 32950As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a substantial amount of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is typically performed in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Malabar FL home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically discover that the online approach to education is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online programs are generally less costly than traditional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just make sure that the online college you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

Once you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of looking for and assessing Malabar FL x-ray technician schools. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be an important variable also. But along with cost and location, what more should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Malabar FL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the Florida xray tech programs you are assessing have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Malabar FL health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Malabar FL healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Malabar FL home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Malabar FL colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the x-ray tech  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Malabar FL, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Decide to Become a Radiology Technician?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to reflect on questions you could be asked. Among the questions that hiring managers typically ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to choose radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not merely the private reasons you may have for becoming an Xray technician, but additionally what characteristics and skills you have that make you good at your profession. You will probably be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, in addition to a significant number of general interview questions, so you must organize some ideas about how you want to respond to them. Because there are numerous factors that go into selecting a career, you can answer this primary question in a number of ways. When formulating an answer, try to include the reasons the profession interests you along with the abilities you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the ideal candidate for the position. Don't make an effort to memorize a response, but take down a few ideas and anecdotes that pertain to your personal strengths and experiences. Going over sample answers can help you to develop your own thoughts, and give you ideas of what to discuss to impress the interviewer.
