Radiology Tech Work Description

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, each has the identical fundamental job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many choose to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for instance mammography. They can work in Loxahatchee FL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also frequently assess its functionality and safety. They are additionally required to keep in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Loxahatchee FL health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Technician Degree Options

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are acceptable as well. Something to consider is that Loxahatchee FL radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may often be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Florida or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be working you might need to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so check with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but many accept additional alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. Having said that, numerous Loxahatchee FL employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Degrees

attending x-ray tech school online in Loxahatchee 33470As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So while you can still earn your degree online, a significant amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is typically carried out in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online segment of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Loxahatchee FL home. Students who continue working while earning their degree often find that the online approach to education is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are generally less costly than traditional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just confirm that the online program you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

Once you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of looking for and evaluating Loxahatchee FL x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you factor in when evaluating schools? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details before you make your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of radiology technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Loxahatchee FL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the Florida xray technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Loxahatchee FL health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Loxahatchee FL healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Loxahatchee FL residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Loxahatchee FL schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Loxahatchee FL, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
