Crestview FL x-ray tech internship programCongrats on your career choice to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Crestview FL in order to learn to be a radiologic technician. But now that you have decided to enter the satisfying field of healthcare, exactly how do you set about picking the ideal school and program so that you will get the proper training to become a qualified professional? And considering that most states do require that radiology technicians become licensed, depending on where you ultimately work you may require training to pass a licensing test. So it’s imperative that you investigate each of the colleges you are considering so that you can compare each program. Most students begin by searching for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they compare tuition and often gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while location and cost need to be taken into account, there are additional critical qualifiers as well. For example, you should ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they sponsor internship programs. These questions and others you should ask the schools you are considering are provided later in this post. But first, let’s explore what a radiology technician does and the degrees and training options that are available.

X-Ray Technician Career Description

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, each has the same primary job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many choose to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for instance mammography. They can practice in Crestview FL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to care for their equipment and frequently evaluate its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Crestview FL health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, usually requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to finish and is more extensive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to bear in mind is that Crestview FL radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may typically be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Florida or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, depending on the state where you will be employed you might need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites vary so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many accept additional alternatives for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many Crestview FL employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it might enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technologist Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Crestview 32536As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your online degree, a substantial portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is often performed in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Crestview FL home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online style of education is far more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. Along with lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just be sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

Once you have decided on the type of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of looking for and assessing Crestview FL x-ray technician schools. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a determining factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are considering.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of xray technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Crestview FL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the Florida radiology tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Crestview FL health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the radiographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Crestview FL healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Crestview FL home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Crestview FL schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Crestview FL, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Choose to Become an Xray Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to consider questions you might be asked. Among the questions that recruiters often ask radiographer applicants is "What compelled you to pick radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to discover is not merely the personal reasons you might have for being a radiology technician, but also what characteristics and talents you have that make you exceptional at what you do. You will likely be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, in addition to a significant number of typical interview questions, so you must organize a number of ideas about how you would like to address them. Crestview, Florida

Crestview is a city in Okaloosa County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,978 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Okaloosa County.[5]

With an elevation of 235 feet (72 m) above sea level, it is one of the highest points in the state; it receives 65 inches (1,700 mm) of rainfall annually, the second-most of any city in the state of Florida, next to Fort Walton Beach with 69 inches. The town was once known as "the icebox of Florida", due to it having the coldest winters in the state. Today it goes by a more popular nickname as the "Hub City" of Northwest Florida.

Crestview is one of Florida's fastest growing cities, with residential developments, shopping, and land area to grow. It has, as of July 2007, become the largest city in Okaloosa County.[6] In 2007, George Whitehurst, who had been mayor for nearly 20 years, resigned, leading to the election of David Cadle. Cadle had recently retired as the long-time director of the Crestview High School band, The Big Red Machine.[7]

As part of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure round, Crestview experienced further population growth as the U.S. Army's 7th Special Forces Group relocated from Fort Bragg, North Carolina to a newly built cantonment facility on the northern end of the Eglin Air Force Base reservation, approximately six miles south of the city.

Crestview is a principal city of the Fort Walton Beach-Crestview-Destin Metropolitan Statistical Area.
