But while cost and location should be taken into account, there are other critical qualifiers also. For instance, you should find out whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internship programs. These inquiries and others you must ask the colleges you are reviewing are presented later in this article. But first, let’s talk about what a radiology tech does and the degrees and education options that are offered.

Radiology Technician Career Summary

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, each has the same major job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some elect to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They can practice in Parachute CO hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment and frequently analyze its performance and safety. They are additionally required to keep complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Parachute CO health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Technician Degree Options

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be acceptable also. Something to keep in mind is that Parachute CO radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may often be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Colorado or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, depending on the state where you will be employed you might need to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several approve additional alternatives for testing also. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Parachute CO employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it might improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Parachute 81635As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your degree online, a large portion of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is often conducted in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Parachute CO home. Students who continue working while earning their degree often discover that the online style of education is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are generally less expensive than conventional alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just confirm that the online program you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online degree may be the best choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

After you have selected the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of looking for and evaluating Parachute CO x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be an important factor as well. But along with cost and location, what else should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of xray tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Parachute CO employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the Colorado radiology technician schools you are evaluating have relationships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Parachute CO health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Parachute CO healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Parachute CO home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Parachute CO schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the x-ray tech  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Parachute CO, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Be a Radiologic Technologist?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to consider questions you could be asked.
