And now that you have chosen to enter the satisfying field of healthcare, exactly how do you set about choosing the ideal college and program to ensure that you will receive the proper training to become a skilled practitioner? And because most states do mandate that x-ray technicians become licensed, depending on where you ultimately practice you might need training to pass a licensing test. So it’s important that you assess each of the schools you are considering in order to compare each program. Most prospective students start by searching for technical schools or colleges that are within driving distance of their homes. Next, they check tuition and often gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while cost and location must be taken into account, there are other significant qualifications as well. For instance, you need to ask if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internships. These inquiries and others you should ask the colleges you are evaluating are provided later in this article. But first, let’s talk about what a x-ray tech does and the credentials and training choices that are available.

X-Ray Tech Occupation Description

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, they all have the same major job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many opt to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for instance mammography. They can practice in Bellvue CO clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also routinely assess its performance and safety. They are additionally required to retain detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Bellvue CO health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Tech Degree Options

Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more expansive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to keep in mind is that Bellvue CO radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may typically be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Colorado or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, based on the state where you will be practicing you may have to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several offer additional alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. However, numerous Bellvue CO employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technician Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Bellvue 80512As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a large portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is typically carried out in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online segment of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Bellvue CO home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often find that the online approach to education is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are often less costly than conventional options. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just confirm that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

When you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of searching for and evaluating Bellvue CO x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to determine if you want to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be an important variable as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you factor in when comparing colleges? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of radiology technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Bellvue CO employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the Colorado radiology tech programs you are interested in have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Bellvue CO medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Bellvue CO healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Bellvue CO residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Bellvue CO colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the radiographer  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Bellvue CO, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Be a Radiology Technician?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's important to review questions you might be asked. One of the questions that interviewers frequently ask radiographer prospects is "What drove you to pick radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to learn is not only the private reasons you may have for becoming an X-Ray tech, but also what qualities and talents you have that make you exceptional at what you do. You will undoubtedly be asked questions relating exclusively to radiography, in addition to a significant number of standard interview questions, so you need to prepare several strategies about how you want to address them. Given that there are so many factors that go into selecting a career, you can address this primary question in a multitude of ways. When preparing an answer, try to include the reasons the work interests you along with the talents you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the perfiect candidate for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but take down a few concepts and anecdotes that pertain to your own strengths and experiences. Going over sample answers can help you to formulate your own concepts, and inspire ideas of what to discuss to wow the recruiter.

Some Background on Bellvue Colorado

Bellvue, Colorado

Bellvue is an unincorporated community and U.S. Post Office in Larimer County, Colorado. It is a small agricultural community located in Pleasant Valley, a narrow valley just northwest of Fort Collins near the mouth of the Poudre Canyon between the Dakota Hogback ridge and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The ZIP Code of the Bellvue Post Office is 80512.[2]

The community is lush area on the south side of the Cache la Poudre River, at the mouth of Rist Canyon, concealed from the open Colorado Piedmont near Fort Collins and LaPorte by the Bellvue Dome, also known as "Goat Hill". The valley formerly stretched southward between the hogback and foothills into the area now inundated by Horsetooth Reservoir. The main agriculture in the valley is cultivation of hay and other crops, as well as cattle and horse ranches. The Colorado Division of Wildlife maintains a large trout hatchery in the valley just north of the Bellvue town site.

Paleoindian sites nearby, including a large bison kill site along the Poudre River, indicate human habitation dating back over 10,000 years. In the early 19th century, the area was inhabited by bands of Arapaho, who clashed regularly in small skirmishes with bands of the Ute tribe who inhabited the mountains. Archaeological remains of teepee rings can be found in the surrounding foothills.

The first white settlers arrived in the valley soon after Antoine Janis became the first white settler in northern Colorado in 1858. The farm and pasture lands were squatted upon in the two years that followed, so that most was claimed by G.R. Sanderson, one of these first settlers, who built the first irrigation ditch in the county in June 1860. The ditch was the second one constructed in northern Colorado. Sanderson sold his claim to J.H. Yeager in 1864, and the ditch came to be known as the Yeager ditch.

Another early settler, Samuel Bingham, settled on the west slope of Bingham Hill in 1860. In 1860, Abner Loomis, who was also an early prominent resident of Fort Collins, settled on a ranch in the valley. Other early settlers in the 1860s included Benjamin T. Whedbee, Perry J. Bosworth, C.W. Harrington, and Louis Blackstock.
