Rosston AR x-ray tech internship programCongratulations on your career choice to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Rosston AR in order to become a radiology technician. And now that you have made a decision to go into the satisfying field of healthcare, just how do you undertake picking the ideal school and program so that you will obtain the appropriate training to become a skilled professional? And because most states do mandate that radiology techs become licensed, based on where you subsequently work you may require training to pass a licensing exam. So it’s essential that you assess each of the colleges you are looking at in order to compare each program. Many potential students begin by looking for colleges or technical schools that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they check tuition and usually gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while location and cost must be taken into consideration, there are other critical qualifications as well. For instance, you must ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internship programs. These questions and others you must ask the colleges you are reviewing are presented later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what a x-ray tech does and the degrees and training options that are available.

X-Ray Tech Occupation Description

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, they all have the identical primary job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some elect to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for example mammography. They can work in Rosston AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment and regularly evaluate its performance and safety. They are also required to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Rosston AR health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Technician Degrees Offered

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more extensive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate as well. One thing to consider is that Rosston AR radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can typically be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Arkansas or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be working you might need to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several approve additional alternatives for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Rosston AR employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technician Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Rosston 71858As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree programs. So although you can still earn your online degree, a considerable amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is often conducted in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online portion of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Rosston AR residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually discover that the online style of learning is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Along with lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just confirm that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

After you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of finding and evaluating Rosston AR x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be an important variable also. But along with cost and location, what more should you look at when comparing schools? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of xray technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Rosston AR employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the Arkansas radiology tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Rosston AR healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Rosston AR healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Rosston AR residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Rosston AR colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the radiographer  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Rosston AR, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's important to review questions you may be asked. Among the questions that hiring managers typically ask radiographer applicants is "What made you select radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to discover is not just the private reasons you may have for becoming a radiology technician, but also what attributes and skills you have that make you outstanding at what you do. You will probably be asked questions pertaining specifically to radiography, along with a certain number of typical interview questions, so you need to ready several approaches about how you want to respond to them. Because there are numerous variables that go into selecting a career, you can address this primary question in a number of ways. When formulating an answer, try to include the reasons the work interests you in addition to the strengths you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the ideal candidate for the job. Don't attempt to memorize an answer, but take down several concepts and topics that relate to your own strengths and experiences. Going over sample answers can help you to develop your own concepts, and give you ideas of what to include to wow the interviewer.
