These inquiries and others you must ask the colleges you are considering are presented later in this article. But first, let’s explore what a x-ray technician does and the credentials and education options that are available.

X-Ray Technician Work Description

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, they all have the identical primary job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many opt to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They may practice in Occidental CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and routinely evaluate its performance and safety. They are also required to retain complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Occidental CA medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate as well. One thing to bear in mind is that Occidental CA radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, based on the state where you will be practicing you may need to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so contact your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but many offer additional alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Occidental CA employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Practical training is usually performed in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Occidental CA home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically discover that the online style of education is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are often cheaper than traditional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just confirm that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiographer Schools

After you have decided on the type of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of locating and assessing Occidental CA x-ray technician schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be an important variable also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you should check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of xray tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Occidental CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the California radiology technician schools you are evaluating have associations with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Occidental CA healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Occidental CA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Occidental CA residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Occidental CA colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the radiographer  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Occidental CA, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Some Background on Occidental California

Occidental, California

Occidental is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sonoma County, California, United States. The population was 1,115 at the 2010 census, down from 1,272 at the 2000 census.

Founded in 1876, Occidental was a stop on the North Pacific Coast Railroad connecting Cazadero to the Sausalito ferry. In return for donating right-of-way to the railroad, a local landowner named "Dutch Bill" Howards received a lifetime railway pass, and the station was named after him.[3]

The railway caused a rapid expansion of the timber industry, and by 1877 there were six sawmills in the Occidental area. Trains also brought vacationers from San Francisco.[3]

Occidental has a total area of 4.97 sq mi (12.9 km2), all land.[4]

The cooperative National Weather Service station reports that Occidental has cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers.
