Radiology Technician Occupation Description

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, they all have the same major job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many elect to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, such as mammography. They may work in La Salle CO hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and routinely evaluate its performance and safety. They are additionally required to retain in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As La Salle CO health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate as well. Something to consider is that La Salle CO radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may frequently be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Colorado or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an Radiologist college, depending on the state where you will be employed you may need to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites vary so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many offer additional alternatives for testing as well. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. However, numerous La Salle CO employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Tech Schools

This is the same for online degree schools. So while you can still earn your online degree, a significant amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is often conducted in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be attended in the comfort of your La Salle CO residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online approach to education is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are generally cheaper than conventional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just be sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the best choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

After you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of locating and evaluating La Salle CO x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a material variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you consider when comparing schools? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of radiology technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of La Salle CO employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the Colorado radiology technician schools you are interested in have associations with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the La Salle CO medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with La Salle CO healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their La Salle CO home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the La Salle CO schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in La Salle CO, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
