These questions and others you must ask the colleges you are examining are presented later in this article. But first, let’s explore what a radiology technician does and the degrees and education options that are offered.

Radiology Tech Job Description

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the same primary job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some elect to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for example mammography. They may practice in Penrose CO hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment plus regularly evaluate its performance and safety. They are also required to retain complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Penrose CO health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Technician Degrees Offered

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to complete and is more extensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to consider is that Penrose CO radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may frequently be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Colorado or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, depending on the state where you will be working you may have to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites vary so contact your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but many accept additional alternatives for testing also. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is optional. However, numerous Penrose CO employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it might enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technician Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Penrose 81240As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree schools. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a large amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is often carried out in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online segment of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Penrose CO home. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically discover that the online approach to learning is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are often more affordable than conventional options. In addition to lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just confirm that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the best choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

As soon as you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of looking for and evaluating Penrose CO x-ray tech schools. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be an important factor also. But along with cost and location, what more should you look at when comparing colleges? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are considering.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of xray tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Penrose CO employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the Colorado radiology tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Penrose CO medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Penrose CO healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Penrose CO residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Penrose CO schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Penrose CO, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Become a Radiology Technician?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's advantageous to consider questions you might be asked. Some Background on Penrose Colorado

Roger Penrose

Sir Roger Penrose OM FRS (born 8 August 1931) is an English mathematical physicist, mathematician and philosopher of science. He is the Emeritus Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Oxford, as well as an Emeritus Fellow of Wadham College.

Penrose is known for his work in mathematical physics, in particular for his contributions to general relativity and cosmology. He has received several prizes and awards, including the 1988 Wolf Prize for physics, which he shared with Stephen Hawking for their contribution to our understanding of the universe.[1]

Born in Colchester, Essex, England, Roger Penrose is a son of psychiatrist and mathematician Lionel Penrose and Margaret Leathes,[a] and the grandson of the physiologist John Beresford Leathes and his Russian wife, Sonia Marie Natanson.[2] Penrose told a Russian audience that his grandmother had left St. Petersburg in the late 1880s.[3] His uncle was artist Roland Penrose, whose son with photographer Lee Miller is Antony Penrose. Penrose is the brother of physicist Oliver Penrose and of chess Grandmaster Jonathan Penrose. Penrose attended University College School and University College, London, where he graduated with a first class degree in mathematics. In 1955, while still a student, Penrose reintroduced the E. H. Moore generalised matrix inverse, also known as the Moore–Penrose inverse,[4] after it had been reinvented by Arne Bjerhammar in 1951. Having started research under the professor of geometry and astronomy, Sir W. V. D. Hodge, Penrose finished his PhD at Cambridge (St John's College) in 1958, writing a thesis on "tensor methods in algebraic geometry" under algebraist and geometer John A. Todd. He devised and popularised the Penrose triangle in the 1950s, describing it as "impossibility in its purest form" and exchanged material with the artist M. C. Escher, whose earlier depictions of impossible objects partly inspired it. Escher's Waterfall, and Ascending and Descending were in turn inspired by Penrose.

As reviewer Manjit Kumar puts it:

Having become a reader at Birkbeck College, London (and having had his attention drawn from pure mathematics to astrophysics by the cosmologist Dennis Sciama, then at Cambridge) it was in 1964 that, in the words of Kip Thorne of Caltech, "Roger Penrose revolutionised the mathematical tools that we use to analyse the properties of spacetime". Until then work on the curved geometry of general relativity had been confined to configurations with sufficiently high symmetry for Einstein's equations to be soluble explicitly, and there was doubt about whether such cases were typical. One approach to this issue was by the use of perturbation theory, as developed under the leadership of John Archibald Wheeler at Princeton. The other, more radically innovative, approach initiated by Penrose was to overlook the detailed geometrical structure of spacetime and instead concentrate attention just on the topology of the space, or at most its conformal structure, since it is the latter — as determined by the lay of the lightcones — that determines the trajectories of lightlike geodesics, and hence their causal relationships. The importance of Penrose's epoch-making paper "Gravitational collapse and space-time singularities"[6] was not only its result (roughly that if an object such as a dying star implodes beyond a certain point, then nothing can prevent the gravitational field getting so strong as to form some kind of singularity). It also showed a way to obtain similarly general conclusions in other contexts, notably that of the cosmological Big Bang, which he dealt with in collaboration with Dennis Sciama's most famous student, Stephen Hawking.
