Woodbridge CT x-ray tech internship programBest wishes on your decision to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Woodbridge CT so you can train to be a radiologic technologist. And now that you have decided to go into the satisfying field of healthcare, exactly how do you go about selecting the right school and program to ensure that you will receive the appropriate training to become a qualified practitioner? And because most states do mandate that x-ray technicians become licensed, based on where you ultimately work you might need preparation to pass a licensing examination. So it’s imperative that you research each of the schools you are looking at so that you can evaluate each program. A number of prospective students start by looking for technical schools or colleges that are within driving distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and typically gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while cost and location must be considered, there are other important qualifiers as well. For instance, you should ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internships. These questions and others you must ask the schools you are evaluating are presented later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a radiology technician does and the degrees and education choices that are offered.

Radiology Technician Career Summary

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the same primary job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many opt to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for example mammography. They can work in Woodbridge CT clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment and also routinely evaluate its functionality and safety. They are additionally required to keep complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Woodbridge CT health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Technician Degrees

x-ray machine in Woodbridge CTThe primary requirement for attending a radiology tech program is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, generally requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be acceptable also. One thing to consider is that Woodbridge CT radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Connecticut or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, based on the state where you will be practicing you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so check with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several approve other alternatives for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Woodbridge CT employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technician Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Woodbridge 06525As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree schools. So while you can still earn your degree online, a significant amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is typically provided in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Woodbridge CT home. Students who keep working while earning their degree often discover that the online approach to education is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just make certain that the online school you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiographer Programs

As soon as you have chosen the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of locating and assessing Woodbridge CT x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a material factor as well. But along with cost and location, what else should you look at when evaluating colleges? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of xray tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Woodbridge CT employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the Connecticut radiology technician schools you are assessing have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Woodbridge CT health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Woodbridge CT healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Woodbridge CT residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Woodbridge CT schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Woodbridge CT, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

Some Background on Woodbridge Connecticut

Woodbridge, Connecticut

Woodbridge is a town in New Haven County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 8,990 at the 2010 census.[1] It is one of the wealthiest towns in Connecticut, ranking 8th in the state per the 2010 US Census in terms of per-capita income, and is home to many of the faculty of Yale University. The town center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Woodbridge Green Historic District.

Woodbridge was originally called "Amity", having been carved out of land originally belonging to New Haven and Milford as an independent parish in 1739. In 1742, the Rev. Benjamin Woodbridge was ordained in Amity, and it is after him that the modern town was named.

In 1661, the town was the location of one of the hideouts of the "Regicides" — three of the judges who signed the death warrant for King Charles I of England. The ruins of their hideout can be found on the nearby West Rock ridge, which runs along the town's eastern border.

Thomas Darling (1720–1789), a tutor at Yale College and later an entrepreneur in New Haven, moved to town in 1774. His home is now the Darling House Museum, operated by the Amity & Woodbridge Historical Association.[2] The original farms of Woodbridge were located in the area of the West River Valley known as "The Flats".

In the modern era, Woodbridge has undergone significant suburbanization.
