Ventura CA x-ray tech internship programBest wishes on your career choice to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Ventura CA so you can learn to be a radiologic technologist. And now that you have made a decision to enter the rewarding field of healthcare, how do you set about selecting the right college and program to ensure that you will receive the appropriate training to become a qualified practitioner? And because most states do require that radiology technicians become licensed, based on where you subsequently work you may require training to pass a licensing exam. So it’s essential that you research each of the colleges you are looking at so that you can evaluate each program. Most prospective students begin by looking for colleges or technical schools that are within driving distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and often settle on the most affordable cost. But while location and cost must be considered, there are additional important qualifiers as well. For example, you should find out whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they sponsor internship programs. These questions and others you should ask the schools you are reviewing are presented later in this article. But first, let’s explore what a radiologic tech does and the degrees and education choices that are available.

X-Ray Technician Job Description

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, they all have the same principal job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many elect to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for instance mammography. They may practice in Ventura CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also regularly evaluate its functionality and safety. They are additionally expected to retain detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Ventura CA health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Tech Degrees Available

x-ray machine in Ventura CAThe basic prerequisite for enrolling in an x-ray tech program is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are acceptable as well. One thing to bear in mind is that Ventura CA radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may frequently be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in California or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be working you might need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so contact your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number approve other options for testing also. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. However, many Ventura CA employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Ventura 93001As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is often carried out in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Ventura CA home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree usually find that the online style of learning is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are generally less costly than on-campus alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Colleges

After you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of finding and evaluating Ventura CA x-ray technician schools. You will also have to decide if you want to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But along with location and cost, what else should you factor in when evaluating colleges? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of radiology tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Ventura CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the California radiology technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Ventura CA health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Ventura CA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within driving distance of their Ventura CA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Ventura CA colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Ventura CA, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Want to Become a Radiology Technician?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to consider questions you may be asked. One of the things that interviewers typically ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to pick radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to learn is not only the personal reasons you may have for being a radiology technician, but also what characteristics and talents you have that make you outstanding at what you do. You will probably be asked questions relating exclusively to radiography, in addition to a certain number of general interview questions, so you must organize a number of strategies about how you want to address them. Because there are so many variables that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this primary question in a number of ways. When readying an answer, attempt to include the reasons the profession appeals to you along with the abilities you possess that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the best candidate for the position. Don't make an effort to memorize a response, but take down some concepts and talking points that pertain to your personal experiences and strengths. Reviewing sample answers can help you to formulate your own thoughts, and give you ideas of what to include to impress the interviewer.

Select the Ideal X-Ray Technician College near Ventura CA

Choosing the ideal x-ray tech school is a crucial first step toward initiating a gratifying new career furnishing diagnostic medical services to patients. The suitable radiographer must be in good physical shape. Radiology techs frequently stand for the greater part of the working day and position and in some cases lift the patient to obtain the correct image. Prospects must also demonstrate an ability to pay close attention to detail and to adhere to the safety requirements developed to protect both the patient and the medical team. X-Ray techs work very closely with patients, other techs as well as the doctors and radiologists. Having interpersonal skills is a must in order to have a pleasant work environment and deliver the best possible patient care. As has been discussed in this article, there are several questions that you need to ask each program you are looking at prior to making your ultimate decision. This is similarly true whether you participate in an online program or drive to classes on-campus. By asking the appropriate questions you can examine and compare each school so you can focus your options before making your decision. And with the right training and your dedication to be successful, you can accomplish your goal to practice as a radiographer in Ventura CA.

Some Background on Ventura California

Ventura, California

Ventura, officially the City of San Buenaventura,[11] is the county seat of Ventura County, California, United States. European explorers encountered a Chumash village, referred to as Shisholop, in Ventura while traveling along the Pacific coast.[12][13](p36) The eponymous Mission San Buenaventura was founded nearby in 1782 where it benefitted from the water of the Ventura River. The town grew around the mission compound and incorporated in 1866. The development of nearby oil fields in the 1920s and the age of automobile travel created a major real estate boom during which many designated landmark buildings were constructed. The mission and these buildings are at the center of a downtown that has become a cultural, retail, and residential district and visitor destination.

Ventura lies along U.S. Route 101 between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, which was one of the original U.S. Routes. The highway is now known as the Ventura Freeway, but the original route through the town along Main Street has been designated El Camino Real, the historic pathway connecting the California missions. During the post–World War II economic expansion, the community grew easterly, building detached single family homes over the rich agricultural land created by the Santa Clara River at the edge of the Oxnard Plain. The population was 106,433 at the 2010 census, up from 100,916 at the 2000 census with the median age being 39.[14] Ventura is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area.

Archaeological discoveries in the area suggest that humans have populated the region for at least 10,000-12,000 years.[15] Archaeological research demonstrates that the Chumash people have deep roots in central and southern coastal regions of California, and has revealed artifacts from their culture.[13](p11) Shisholop Village, designated Historic Point of Interest #18 by the city at the foot of nearby Figueroa Street, was the site of a Chumash village.[12] The Ventura band (Mitskanaka), which was in residence at the time of the arrival of the Spanish, had contact with the Limu band on Santa Cruz Island, who traveled in seagoing Tomols, plank-built boats, bringing shell bead money and chert in trade.[16][17]

In 1769, the Spanish Portola expedition, first recorded European visitors to inland areas of California, came down the Santa Clara River Valley from the previous night's encampment near today's Saticoy and camped near the outlet of the Ventura River on August 14. Fray Juan Crespi, a Franciscan missionary traveling with the expedition, noted that "we saw a regular town, the most populous and best laid-out of all that we had seen on the journey up to the present time."[18] Archaeological records found that the Chumash village they encountered was settled sometime around 1000 A.D.

Junípero Serra, first leader of the Franciscans in California, founded Mission San Buenaventura in 1782 as his ninth and last mission establish near the Chumash village as part of Spain's colonization of Alta California.[19] The mission was named for St. Bonaventure, a Thirteenth Century Franciscan saint and a Doctor of the Church. San Miguel Chapel was the first outpost and center of operations while the first Mission San Buenaventura was being constructed. The first mission burned in 1801 and a replacement building of brick and stone was completed in 1809. The bell tower and facade of the new mission was destroyed by an 1812 earthquake.[20][21] The Mission was rebuilt and functions as a parish church. Historic tours of downtown include the mission compound.
