And since most states do require that radiology techs become licensed, based on where you subsequently work you might need preparation to pass a licensing exam. So it’s essential that you research each of the schools you are considering so that you can compare each program. Many potential students begin by looking for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and frequently settle on the lowest cost. But while expense and location must be taken into consideration, there are other critical qualifications as well. For example, you should find out whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internships. These questions and others you must ask the schools you are considering are provided later in this article. But first, let’s talk about what a radiology technician does and the credentials and training choices that are offered.

X-Ray Tech Career Description

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, each has the identical primary job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many elect to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They may practice in Kaplan LA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment and regularly assess its functionality and safety. They are also required to retain complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Kaplan LA health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degree Options

x-ray machine in Kaplan LAThe basic prerequisite for enrolling in an x-ray tech program is to have earned a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to consider is that Kaplan LA radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Louisiana or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist school, based on the state where you will be employed you might need to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many approve additional alternatives for testing also. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. However, numerous Kaplan LA employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it could enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Kaplan 70548As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree colleges. So while you can still earn your degree online, a significant portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is often performed in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Kaplan LA home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online style of education is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than conventional options. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just make certain that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Radiographer Colleges

After you have selected the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of finding and evaluating Kaplan LA x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be critical. The price of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a material factor also. But along with location and cost, what more should you look at when comparing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? Most radiology tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Kaplan LA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the Louisiana radiology technician colleges you are interested in have partnerships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Kaplan LA health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Kaplan LA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Kaplan LA residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Kaplan LA colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Kaplan LA, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's important to review questions you may be asked. Among the things that hiring managers often ask radiographer candidates is "What made you choose radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not merely the personal reasons you may have for being an Xray technician, but additionally what characteristics and talents you possess that make you good at what you do. You will likely be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, along with a certain number of typical interview questions, so you need to ready a number of approaches about how you would like to answer them. Since there are so many variables that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this primary question in a variety of ways. When preparing an answer, aim to include the reasons the profession appeals to you as well as the strengths you possess that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the best choice for the position. Don't attempt to memorize an answer, but take down some concepts and topics that relate to your own experiences and strengths. Reviewing sample responses can help you to prepare your own concepts, and inspire ideas of what to include to impress the recruiter.

Some Background on Kaplan Louisiana

Kaplan turbine

The Kaplan turbine is a propeller-type water turbine which has adjustable blades. It was developed in 1913 by Austrian professor Viktor Kaplan,[1] who combined automatically adjusted propeller blades with automatically adjusted wicket gates to achieve efficiency over a wide range of flow and water level.

The Kaplan turbine was an evolution of the Francis turbine. Its invention allowed efficient power production in low-head applications which was not possible with Francis turbines. The head ranges from 10–70 metres and the output ranges from 5 to 200 MW. Runner diameters are between 2 and 11 metres. Turbines rotate at a constant rate, which varies from facility to facility. That rate ranges from as low as 69.2 rpm (Bonneville North Powerhouse, Washington U.S.) to 429 rpm. The Kaplan turbine installation believed to generate the most power from its nominal head of 34.65 m is as of 2013 the Tocoma Dam Power Plant (Venezuela) Kaplan turbine generating 230 MW (Turbine capacity, 257MVA for generator) with each of ten 8.6 m diameter runners.[2]

Kaplan turbines are now widely used throughout the world in high-flow, low-head power production.

Viktor Kaplan living in Brno, Austria-Hungary, obtained his first patent for an adjustable blade propeller turbine in 1912. But the development of a commercially successful machine would take another decade. Kaplan struggled with cavitation problems, and in 1922 abandoned his research for health reasons.

In 1919 Kaplan installed a demonstration unit at Poděbrady, Czechoslovakia. In 1922 Voith introduced an 1100 HP (about 800 kW) Kaplan turbine for use mainly on rivers. In 1924 an 8 MW unit went on line at Lilla Edet, Sweden. This marked the commercial success and widespread acceptance of Kaplan turbines.
