But first, let’s explore what a radiology tech does and the degrees and education options that are available.

X-Ray Technician Work Summary

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the identical fundamental job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some opt to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They may practice in Cottonwood CA clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and also routinely analyze its functionality and safety. They are also required to retain complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Cottonwood CA medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Technician Degrees Offered

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are appropriate also. Something to keep in mind is that Cottonwood CA radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification mandates in California or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, depending on the state where you will be working you may have to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so contact your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but many provide other alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Cottonwood CA employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it may enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every 2 years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Degrees

attending x-ray tech school online in Cottonwood 96022As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree programs. So although you can still earn your online degree, a significant amount of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is typically provided in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Cottonwood CA residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually find that the online style of learning is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just make certain that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Colleges

As soon as you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of locating and evaluating Cottonwood CA x-ray technician schools. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a material factor also. But along with cost and location, what more should you consider when evaluating schools? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of xray technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Cottonwood CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the California radiology technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Cottonwood CA health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Cottonwood CA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Cottonwood CA home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Cottonwood CA colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Cottonwood CA, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Be an Xray Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to review questions you may be asked. One of the things that interviewers often ask radiographer candidates is "What made you decide on radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to learn is not merely the personal reasons you may have for being an X-Ray tech, but also what qualities and talents you have that make you good at your profession. You will probably be asked questions relating exclusively to radiography, as well as a certain number of general interview questions, so you need to prepare several approaches about how you would like to respond to them. Because there are so many variables that go into selecting a career, you can address this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When preparing an answer, attempt to include the reasons the work appeals to you as well as the strengths you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the perfiect candidate for the position. Don't try to memorize an answer, but jot down some concepts and anecdotes that pertain to your personal strengths and experiences. Reviewing sample responses can help you to prepare your own thoughts, and provide ideas of what to discuss to impress the recruiter.
