But first, let’s discuss what a radiologic tech does and the credentials and training choices that are available.

X-Ray Tech Work Summary

They can also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, they all have the same principal job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many choose to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for instance mammography. They may practice in Ramona CA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment plus routinely evaluate its functionality and safety. They are also expected to keep in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Ramona CA medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, usually requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are acceptable as well. Something to consider is that Ramona CA radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may typically be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification requirements in California or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an Radiologist school, depending on the state where you will be employed you might need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several offer additional alternatives for testing as well. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Ramona CA employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every 2 years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Degrees

This is the same for online degree programs. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a significant portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is typically performed in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Ramona CA home. Students who keep working while earning their degree often find that the online approach to education is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less costly than conventional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Radiographer Colleges

Once you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of looking for and assessing Ramona CA x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a determining factor as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of xray technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Ramona CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the California xray technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Ramona CA health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Ramona CA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Ramona CA home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Ramona CA colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the radiographer  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Ramona CA, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Want to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's important to reflect on questions you could be asked. One of the things that hiring managers often ask radiographer candidates is "What made you pick radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to learn is not just the private reasons you might have for becoming a radiology technician, but also what qualities and talents you have that make you good at your profession. You will likely be asked questions relating primarily to radiography, in addition to a significant number of routine interview questions, so you need to organize some approaches about how you want to respond to them. Since there are several factors that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this primary question in a multitude of ways. When preparing an answer, attempt to include the reasons the work appeals to you as well as the talents you have that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the ideal choice for the position. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but take down a few ideas and anecdotes that pertain to your personal experiences and strengths. Reviewing sample answers can help you to prepare your own concepts, and inspire ideas of what to discuss to enthuse the recruiter.

Some Background on Ramona California

Ramona, California

Ramona is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Diego County, California. The population was 20,292 at the 2010 census.

The term Ramona also refers to an unincorporated community (with some plans to incorporate)[2][3] that includes both the Ramona CDP and the adjacent CDP of San Diego Country Estates. The population of the two CDPs, which does not include the fringe areas surrounding the CDPs, was 30,301 at the 2010 census, up from 25,223 at the 2000 census. The Ramona Community Planning Area had a population of 33,404 at the 2000 census. The January 1, 2006, population of the Ramona Community Planning Area is estimated to be 36,405 by the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG).[4] USDA Hardiness Zones are 9b and 10a.[5][6]

Before it was permanently settled, the Ramona area was inhabited by DiegueƱo semi-nomadic people, who established temporary settlements there as they moved between coastal and inland grounds.[7] Their presence is indicated by archeological evidence such as rock paintings, etchings, and grinding stones used to grind acorns into meal for bread.

In 1775 Spanish soldiers came to the Ramona area and attacked a native village ("Pamo") in retaliation for the destruction of a nearby mission. This is the first recorded interaction between indigenous groups and Europeans in the area.[citation needed]

The next recorded foray of Europeans into the area was a Catholic expeditionary mission (Father Sanchez and six Spanish soldiers), who stopped for a meal in the valley. Sanchez recorded that the valley appeared well-suited for raising hay.[citation needed]
