And since most states do require that x-ray techs become licensed, based on where you subsequently work you might require training to pass a licensing exam. So it’s imperative that you assess each of the schools you are considering so that you can evaluate each program. A number of potential students begin by searching for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and typically gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while cost and location need to be considered, there are other significant qualifiers as well. For example, you should find out if the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they sponsor internship programs. These questions and others you must ask the schools you are evaluating are presented later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what a x-ray tech does and the degrees and training choices that are offered.

X-Ray Technician Occupation Description

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, each has the same major job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many choose to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They may practice in Grover Beach CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment and regularly analyze its functionality and safety. They are also expected to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Grover Beach CA health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Tech Degree Options

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, usually requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to finish and is more extensive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be acceptable also. One thing to consider is that Grover Beach CA radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can typically be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification requirements in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist college, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might need to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so check with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number provide additional alternatives for testing also. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Grover Beach CA employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Degrees

This is the same for online degree programs. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is often performed in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Grover Beach CA residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree usually discover that the online approach to education is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just be sure that the online college you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiographer Programs

After you have decided on the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of looking for and assessing Grover Beach CA x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a material variable as well. But along with cost and location, what else should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Technician Schools Accredited? Most radiology tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Grover Beach CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the California radiology technician colleges you are interested in have associations with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Grover Beach CA healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Grover Beach CA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Grover Beach CA residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Grover Beach CA schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the radiographer  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Grover Beach CA, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
