And considering that most states do mandate that x-ray technicians become licensed, depending on where you ultimately practice you may need preparation to pass a licensing examination. So it’s imperative that you assess each of the colleges you are considering so that you can evaluate each program. Most students begin by looking for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they compare tuition and frequently gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while location and cost need to be taken into account, there are additional important qualifiers also. For example, you must ask if the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internship programs. These inquiries and others you must ask the schools you are considering are provided later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a radiology tech does and the credentials and education choices that are available.

Radiology Tech Career Summary

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the same major job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many choose to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, such as mammography. They may practice in Thermal CA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and also frequently evaluate its functionality and safety. They are additionally required to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Thermal CA medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Technician Degrees Available

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate also. Something to consider is that Thermal CA radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may typically be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in California or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, based on the state where you will be employed you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so check with your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number accept other alternatives for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Thermal CA employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Tech Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Thermal 92274As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree colleges. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a substantial amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is typically provided in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online segment of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Thermal CA residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online style of education is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just make sure that the online program you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the best choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

When you have selected the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of looking for and evaluating Thermal CA x-ray technician schools. You will also have to decide if you want to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be an important variable as well. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you factor in when evaluating colleges? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these important details before you make your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? Most radiology tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Thermal CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the California radiology tech programs you are assessing have associations with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Thermal CA medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the radiographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Thermal CA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Thermal CA home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Thermal CA colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the radiographer  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Thermal CA, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Become a Radiology Technician?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's advantageous to consider questions you could be asked. Among the questions that hiring managers often ask radiographer applicants is "What compelled you to select radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to discover is not only the personal reasons you may have for being an X-Ray tech, but also what characteristics and talents you possess that make you good at what you do. You will likely be asked questions pertaining specifically to radiography, as well as a significant number of general interview questions, so you must organize several approaches about how you would like to answer them. Considering there are several factors that go into selecting a career, you can answer this fundamental question in a variety of ways. When preparing an answer, try to include the reasons the profession appeals to you in addition to the strengths you have that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the leading candidate for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but take down several concepts and topics that relate to your own strengths and experiences. Reviewing sample responses can help you to prepare your own thoughts, and give you ideas of what to include to wow the interviewer.

Some Background on Thermal California

Thermal, California

Thermal is an unincorporated community within the Coachella Valley in Riverside County, California located approximately 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Palm Springs and about 9.5 miles (15.3 km) north of the Salton Sea. The community's elevation is 138 feet (42 m) below mean sea level. It is inside area code 760 and is in ZIP Code 92274. The population was 2,865 at the 2010 census. For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined Thermal a census-designated place (CDP), which does not precisely correspond to the historical community.

Thermal (originally Kokell)[4]:114 began as a railroad camp in 1910 for employees of the Southern Pacific Railroad, followed by Mecca (originally called Walters) in 1915 and Arabia in between, each with about 1,000 residents. Permanent dwellings were soon established on Avenue 56 (renamed Airport Boulevard), former U.S. Route 99 (State Route 86) and State Route 111 by the 1930s.

Agricultural development from canal irrigation made the area thrive in greenery by the 1950s, followed by the former Camp Young U.S. Naval Air station converted into Thermal Airport by 1965. In the early 1990s, a four-lane highway (State Route 86) was constructed over an earlier transportation route. There is a proposal for a major commercial aviation Airport known as the Jackie Cochran-Desert Cities Regional Airport in the same site.

An auto racetrack and club, a members-only racetrack near Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport (Thermal Club), is under development, and is being built on land originally owned by the Kohl family (owners of Kohl Department stores) and built in partnership with them. The Kohls still own significant property in this area.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP covers an area of 9.5 square miles (25.5 km²), all of it land.[5]
