Regardless of the name, each has the same fundamental job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some choose to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They may work in Raisin CA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be acceptable as well. Something to consider is that Raisin CA radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may typically be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which many schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, based on the state where you will be employed you may need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so check with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several approve additional alternatives for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, numerous Raisin CA employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it could enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Degrees

attending x-ray tech school online in Raisin 93652As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree colleges. So even though you can still earn your online degree, a significant amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is typically conducted in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Raisin CA home. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually find that the online style of education is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are generally more affordable than conventional options. Along with reduced tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the best choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

Once you have selected the type of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of locating and assessing Raisin CA x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be an important variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when reviewing colleges? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these important details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Raisin CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the California radiology technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Raisin CA medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the radiographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Raisin CA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Raisin CA home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Raisin CA colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Raisin CA, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to review questions you could be asked. One of the questions that interviewers often ask radiographer prospects is "What drove you to decide on radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not merely the private reasons you might have for being an Xray technician, but also what characteristics and talents you possess that make you outstanding at what you do.
