  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, usually requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more extensive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate also. One thing to bear in mind is that Cantonment FL radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may frequently be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Florida or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, based on the state where you will be working you may need to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so check with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many accept additional options for testing also. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, numerous Cantonment FL employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technologist Classes

This is the same for online degree programs. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is usually performed in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Cantonment FL home. Students who keep working while earning their degree often find that the online style of learning is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than conventional options. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just make sure that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask X Ray Tech Programs

After you have selected the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of locating and evaluating Cantonment FL x-ray technician schools. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be an important variable also. But along with location and cost, what else should you consider when reviewing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of radiology technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Cantonment FL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the Florida xray technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Cantonment FL health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the radiographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Cantonment FL healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Cantonment FL home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Cantonment FL schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Cantonment FL, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Want to Be an X-Ray Tech?
