And because the majority of states do mandate that radiology techs become licensed, based on where you subsequently work you might require preparation to pass a licensing exam. So it’s imperative that you assess each of the colleges you are considering in order to evaluate each program. Many students start by looking for colleges or technical schools that are within driving distance of their residences. Next, they compare tuition and frequently settle on the most affordable cost. But while expense and location should be considered, there are other critical qualifications as well. For example, you should find out if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internships. These inquiries and others you must ask the colleges you are examining are provided later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a radiology technician does and the credentials and education choices that are offered.

Radiology Tech Career Description

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, they all have the identical major job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some opt to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for instance mammography. They may work in Tempe AZ clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to care for their equipment and also regularly analyze its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Tempe AZ health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Technician Degrees Offered

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, generally requires 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be appropriate as well. Something to keep in mind is that Tempe AZ radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Arizona or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, depending on the state where you will be working you might have to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so contact your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several offer other options for testing also. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Tempe AZ employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technician Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Tempe 85280As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your online degree, a significant portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is usually conducted in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Tempe AZ residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online style of learning is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are generally less costly than traditional options. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just confirm that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiographer Programs

As soon as you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of looking for and assessing Tempe AZ x-ray tech schools. You will also need to determine if you want to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be an important factor also. But along with location and cost, what else should you consider when comparing schools? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? Most radiology technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Tempe AZ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the Arizona xray technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Tempe AZ health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the radiographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Tempe AZ healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Tempe AZ home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Tempe AZ schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Tempe AZ, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Become an Xray Technician?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's important to review questions you may be asked. Among the things that hiring managers frequently ask radiographer applicants is "What drove you to decide on radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to discover is not merely the private reasons you might have for becoming a radiology technician, but additionally what attributes and talents you possess that make you outstanding at what you do. You will probably be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, along with a significant number of typical interview questions, so you need to prepare a number of ideas about how you would like to answer them. Given that there are numerous factors that go into choosing a career, you can address this fundamental question in a number of ways. When preparing an answer, attempt to include the reasons the profession interests you as well as the strengths you possess that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the best candidate for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but write down a few concepts and anecdotes that pertain to your personal strengths and experiences. Going over sample answers can help you to formulate your own thoughts, and provide ideas of what to discuss to wow the recruiter.

Some Background on Tempe Arizona

Tempe, Arizona

Tempe (/tɛmˈpiː/ TEM'-pee;[4]Oidbaḍ in Pima), also known as Hayden's Ferry during the territorial times of Arizona, is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States, with the Census Bureau reporting a 2010 population of 161,719.[2] The city is named after the Vale of Tempe in Greece. Tempe is located in the East Valley section of metropolitan Phoenix; it is bordered by Phoenix and Guadalupe on the west, Scottsdale on the north, Chandler on the south, and Mesa on the east. Tempe is also the location of the main campus of Arizona State University.

The Hohokam lived in this area and built canals to support their agriculture. They abandoned their settlements during the 15th century, with a few individuals and families remaining nearby.

Fort McDowell was established approximately 25 mi (40 km) northeast of present downtown Tempe on the upper Salt River in 1865 allowing for new towns to be built farther down the Salt River. US military service members and Hispanic workers were hired to grow food and animal feed to supply the fort, and less than a year later, had set up small camps near the river that were the first permanent communities in the Valley after the fall of the Hohokam. (Phoenix was settled shortly afterward, by 1867–68.) The two settlements were 'Hayden's Ferry', named after a ferry service operated by Charles T. Hayden, and 'San Pablo', and were located west and east of Hayden Butte respectively. The ferry became the key river crossing in the area. The Tempe Irrigating Canal Company was soon established by William Kirkland and James McKinney to provide water for alfalfa, wheat, barley, oats, and cotton.

Pioneer Darrell Duppa is credited with suggesting Tempe's name, adopted in 1879, after comparing the Salt River valley near a 300-foot (91 m)-tall butte, to the Vale of Tempe near Mount Olympus in Greece.[5]

In 1885, the 13th Arizona Territorial Legislature chose Tempe for the site of the Territorial Normal School, which became Arizona Normal School, Arizona State Teachers College, Arizona State College and finally Arizona State University.
