No matter what the name, they all have the same major job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, generally requires 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish and is more expansive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable as well. Something to bear in mind is that Redondo Beach CA radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can typically be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing mandates in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, based on the state where you will be working you may have to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number approve additional alternatives for testing also. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, numerous Redondo Beach CA employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technologist Degrees

This is the same for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your degree online, a substantial amount of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is often conducted in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Redondo Beach CA residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online style of learning is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are often less costly than conventional options. Along with lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just confirm that the online college you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the best choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

After you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of locating and assessing Redondo Beach CA x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a material factor as well. But along with cost and location, what else should you factor in when comparing colleges? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? Most xray tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Redondo Beach CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the California xray technician schools you are reviewing have partnerships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Redondo Beach CA medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Redondo Beach CA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Redondo Beach CA residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Redondo Beach CA colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Redondo Beach CA, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Desire to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's important to consider questions you may be asked. Among the things that hiring managers often ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to decide on radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is hoping to discover is not just the private reasons you may have for becoming a radiology technician, but additionally what characteristics and abilities you have that make you outstanding at your profession. You will undoubtedly be asked questions relating exclusively to radiography, in addition to a certain number of routine interview questions, so you should organize several approaches about how you want to respond to them. Because there are several factors that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this primary question in a variety of ways. When formulating an answer, aim to include the reasons the profession appeals to you as well as the abilities you possess that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the leading choice for the job. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but take down some concepts and topics that relate to your personal strengths and experiences. Going over sample responses can help you to develop your own thoughts, and inspire ideas of what to discuss to enthuse the recruiter.
