Opp AL x-ray tech internship programCongrats on your career choice to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Opp AL so you can train to be a radiologic technician. And now that you have chosen to enter the rewarding field of healthcare, how do you tackle selecting the ideal college and program to ensure that you will get the appropriate training to become a qualified practitioner? And because most states do mandate that x-ray technicians become licensed, based on where you subsequently practice you might require training to pass a licensing examination. So it’s essential that you assess each of the colleges you are considering in order to evaluate each program. A number of potential students start by searching for colleges or technical schools that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and typically gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while cost and location need to be considered, there are additional critical qualifications as well. For instance, you must find out if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internships. These questions and others you must ask the schools you are examining are presented later in this post. But first, let’s explore what a radiology technician does and the credentials and training choices that are available.

X-Ray Technician Occupation Description

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many opt to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for example mammography. They may practice in Opp AL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment and also regularly evaluate its functionality and safety. They are additionally required to keep in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Opp AL medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Technician Degrees Available

x-ray machine in Opp ALThe primary prerequisite for enrolling in a radiology tech school is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, generally takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate also. Something to bear in mind is that Opp AL radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may frequently be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Alabama or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, based on the state where you will be practicing you may need to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many accept other options for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. However, many Opp AL employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it may increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every 2 years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Opp 36467As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So while you can still earn your online degree, a large amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is usually provided in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Opp AL residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often find that the online approach to learning is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus options. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just confirm that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

After you have selected the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of finding and evaluating Opp AL x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to determine if you want to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you look at when comparing colleges? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Schools Accredited? Most xray tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Opp AL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the Alabama radiology tech colleges you are assessing have relationships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Opp AL health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Opp AL healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Opp AL home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Opp AL colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the x-ray tech  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Opp AL, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Choose to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's advantageous to consider questions you could be asked. Among the things that recruiters frequently ask radiographer candidates is "What made you choose radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to discover is not just the private reasons you might have for being a radiology technician, but also what characteristics and talents you have that make you good at your profession. You will undoubtedly be asked questions pertaining primarily to radiography, in addition to a certain number of standard interview questions, so you must organize some approaches about how you want to address them. Considering there are several variables that go into selecting a career, you can answer this primary question in a multitude of ways. When preparing an answer, try to include the reasons the profession interests you along with the strengths you possess that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the leading choice for the job. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but jot down several concepts and topics that relate to your personal experiences and strengths. Going over sample answers can help you to prepare your own thoughts, and give you ideas of what to include to impress the interviewer.
