But first, let’s explore what a radiology tech does and the degrees and training options that are available.

X-Ray Technician Work Description

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the identical primary job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some choose to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for instance mammography. They can practice in North Grosvenordale CT clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment and routinely assess its functionality and safety. They are additionally expected to retain detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As North Grosvenordale CT health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Technician Degrees Offered

x-ray machine in North Grosvenordale CTThe primary prerequisite for attending an x-ray tech college is to have attained a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, usually takes 18 months to two years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are acceptable as well. Something to consider is that North Grosvenordale CT radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Connecticut or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an Radiologist program, depending on the state where you will be working you might have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many provide additional alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous North Grosvenordale CT employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it could enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in North Grosvenordale 06255As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree programs. So while you can still earn your online degree, a significant portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is typically provided in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your North Grosvenordale CT residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree usually find that the online approach to education is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are often cheaper than traditional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just confirm that the online college you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the best option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiographer Schools

Once you have selected the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of looking for and evaluating North Grosvenordale CT x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be an important factor as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of radiology technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of North Grosvenordale CT employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the Connecticut radiology technician programs you are interested in have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the North Grosvenordale CT healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with North Grosvenordale CT healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their North Grosvenordale CT home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the North Grosvenordale CT schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the radiographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in North Grosvenordale CT, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Decide to Be a Radiology Technician?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to review questions you may be asked. One of the questions that recruiters typically ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to choose radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is hoping to learn is not just the personal reasons you might have for becoming an X-Ray tech, but additionally what characteristics and abilities you have that make you exceptional at what you do. You will likely be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, as well as a certain number of routine interview questions, so you must organize some ideas about how you would like to respond to them. Considering there are several factors that go into selecting a career, you can address this fundamental question in a variety of ways. When formulating an answer, aim to include the reasons the work appeals to you in addition to the talents you possess that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the best choice for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but jot down several ideas and talking points that pertain to your own strengths and experiences. Reading through sample answers can help you to formulate your own concepts, and give you ideas of what to discuss to enthuse the interviewer.
