These questions and others you should ask the schools you are examining are presented later in this article. But first, let’s talk about what a x-ray technician does and the degrees and education options that are offered.

Radiology Technician Career Summary

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, they all have the identical principal job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some elect to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for example mammography. They may work in Dacono CO hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and regularly assess its performance and safety. They are also expected to keep detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Dacono CO medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more expansive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate as well. One thing to keep in mind is that Dacono CO radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may typically be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Colorado or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist program, based on the state where you will be practicing you may need to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their requirements differ so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but a number provide other alternatives for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. However, numerous Dacono CO employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Dacono 80514As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree programs. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is usually performed in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Dacono CO home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically discover that the online style of education is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online schools are often cheaper than conventional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just make certain that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

As soon as you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of searching for and assessing Dacono CO x-ray technician schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be an important variable also. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when reviewing schools? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of radiology tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Dacono CO health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the Colorado radiology technician programs you are assessing have relationships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Dacono CO medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Dacono CO healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Dacono CO home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Dacono CO colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Dacono CO, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Choose to Become an Xray Technician?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's important to consider questions you might be asked. Among the questions that hiring managers frequently ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to choose radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to uncover is not just the private reasons you may have for being an X-Ray tech, but additionally what qualities and skills you have that make you exceptional at your profession. You will likely be asked questions relating exclusively to radiography, as well as a certain number of routine interview questions, so you need to ready a number of strategies about how you would like to respond to them. Given that there are several factors that go into choosing a career, you can address this fundamental question in a variety of ways. When preparing an answer, try to include the reasons the profession interests you along with the talents you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the ideal choice for the position. Don't attempt to memorize an answer, but take down several concepts and talking points that relate to your personal strengths and experiences.
