A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete and is more expansive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are acceptable also. It can typically be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Connecticut or the state you will be working as applicable.

Currently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept additional options for testing also. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Voluntown CT employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may enhance your career options to become certified. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a substantial amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is often provided in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online segment of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Voluntown CT home. Students who continue working while earning their degree often find that the online approach to learning is far more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than conventional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just make certain that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online school may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

As soon as you have decided on the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of locating and evaluating Voluntown CT x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be a determining variable also. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you consider when evaluating colleges? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of xray tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Voluntown CT health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the Connecticut xray technician programs you are evaluating have associations with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Voluntown CT health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Voluntown CT healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Voluntown CT residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Voluntown CT schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Voluntown CT, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
