Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally takes 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate also. Something to bear in mind is that Monument CO radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which a large number of schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Colorado or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be working you might have to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several provide additional options for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Monument CO employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it may increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

But just be sure that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the best choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiographer Schools

After you have selected the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of finding and assessing Monument CO x-ray tech schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be an important factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you factor in when evaluating schools? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of xray technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Monument CO health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the Colorado radiology tech colleges you are interested in have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Monument CO health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Monument CO healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Monument CO residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Monument CO schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the radiographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Monument CO, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Be an Xray Technician?
