And since the majority of states do mandate that x-ray techs become licensed, depending on where you ultimately practice you might need training to pass a licensing examination. So it’s important that you investigate each of the colleges you are looking at so that you can evaluate each program. Many prospective students start by searching for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they check tuition and usually gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while location and cost need to be taken into consideration, there are other important qualifications as well. For instance, you must ask if the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internships. These questions and others you must ask the colleges you are considering are presented later in this article. But first, let’s discuss what a radiologic tech does and the degrees and training options that are available.

X-Ray Tech Work Summary

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, they all have the same major job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some opt to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They may practice in Danville AR clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and also regularly analyze its performance and safety. They are also required to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Danville AR health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Tech Degrees

Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to finish and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are acceptable as well. Something to consider is that Danville AR radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may typically be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Arkansas or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, based on the state where you will be practicing you may have to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites vary so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several provide other options for testing also. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. However, many Danville AR employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Tech Schools

This is no different for online degree colleges. So even though you can still obtain your degree online, a considerable portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is usually performed in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online segment of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Danville AR home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree usually discover that the online style of learning is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are generally more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Along with lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just be sure that the online school you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask X Ray Tech Programs

Once you have selected the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of looking for and evaluating Danville AR x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a material factor also. But along with location and cost, what more should you consider when comparing schools? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are considering.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? Most xray technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Danville AR health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the Arkansas xray technician colleges you are interested in have associations with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Danville AR health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Danville AR healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Danville AR home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Danville AR schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Danville AR, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Be an Xray Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's a good idea to review questions you could be asked. Among the questions that interviewers often ask radiographer applicants is "What made you pick radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to learn is not only the private reasons you may have for becoming an X-Ray tech, but also what characteristics and talents you have that make you outstanding at your profession. You will likely be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, as well as a certain number of general interview questions, so you must organize a number of ideas about how you would like to address them. Considering there are several variables that go into choosing a career, you can answer this primary question in a multitude of ways. When readying an answer, try to include the reasons the profession interests you along with the abilities you possess that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the ideal choice for the position. Don't attempt to memorize an answer, but take down some ideas and topics that relate to your personal strengths and experiences. Reading through sample answers can help you to formulate your own thoughts, and inspire ideas of what to include to wow the recruiter.

The city was named after the steamboat Danville, which plied the Petit Jean River in the 1840s. A log courthouse was constructed at Danville in 1844, though this was replaced by a frame building by 1850. A Masonic lodge was organized in Danville in the late 1840s. The number of creeks in the area led to the construction of numerous water power mills around Danville.[5]
