Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, usually takes 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable also. Something to bear in mind is that Middlefield CT radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can typically be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Connecticut or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an Radiologist college, based on the state where you will be employed you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so contact your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but many approve other options for testing also. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. However, many Middlefield CT employers favor hiring radiology techs that are certified so it could improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Schools

This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your online degree, a considerable portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is usually conducted in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Middlefield CT home. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically discover that the online style of learning is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just make certain that the online college you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

What to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

As soon as you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of searching for and evaluating Middlefield CT x-ray tech schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be an important variable also. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of xray tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Middlefield CT employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the Connecticut xray technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Middlefield CT medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the radiographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Middlefield CT healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Middlefield CT residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Middlefield CT schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Middlefield CT, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Want to Be an Xray Technician?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to consider questions you may be asked. One of the questions that interviewers frequently ask radiographer applicants is "What drove you to choose radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is hoping to learn is not just the private reasons you may have for being an X-Ray tech, but additionally what qualities and abilities you have that make you good at what you do. You will undoubtedly be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, along with a significant number of typical interview questions, so you must prepare a number of strategies about how you would like to address them. Since there are numerous variables that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a variety of ways. When preparing an answer, try to include the reasons the work interests you along with the strengths you have that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the best choice for the position. Don't try to memorize an answer, but jot down some ideas and topics that relate to your own experiences and strengths. Going over sample answers can help you to formulate your own concepts, and provide ideas of what to discuss to impress the recruiter.
