An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to finish and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are appropriate as well. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing mandates in California or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several accept additional options for testing also. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. However, many Escondido CA employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it might enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But just be sure that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

As soon as you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of searching for and evaluating Escondido CA x-ray technician schools. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be an important variable as well. But along with location and cost, what else should you factor in when comparing schools? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of xray technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Escondido CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the California xray technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Escondido CA healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the radiographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Escondido CA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Escondido CA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Escondido CA schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Escondido CA, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Some Background on Escondido California

Escondido, California

Escondido (/ˌɛskənˈdiːdoʊ/ ES-kən-DEE-doh) is a city located in San Diego County's North County region, 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Downtown San Diego, California. The city occupies a shallow valley ringed by rocky hills. Incorporated in 1888, it is one of the oldest cities in San Diego County. The city had a population of 143,911 in the 2010 census.

"Escondido" is a Spanish word meaning "hidden". One source says the name originally referred to agua escondida or hidden water;[7] another says it meant "hidden treasure".[8]

The city is known as Eskondiid in Diegueño.[9]

The Escondido area was first settled by the Luiseño, who established campsites and villages along the creek running through the area. They named the place "Mehel-om-pom-pavo." The Kumeyaay migrated from areas near the Colorado River, settling both in the San Pasqual Valley and near the San Dieguito River in the southwestern and western portions of what is now Escondido. Most of the villages and campsites today have been destroyed by development and agriculture.[10]
