And now that you have made a decision to go into the satisfying field of healthcare, just how do you go about picking the right college and program so that you will get the proper training to become a qualified practitioner? And because most states do require that radiology technicians become licensed, depending on where you subsequently practice you might require training to pass a licensing test. So it’s essential that you assess each of the schools you are looking at so that you can compare each program. Most potential students begin by searching for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they compare tuition and typically gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while cost and location need to be considered, there are other critical qualifications as well. For instance, you should ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internships. These questions and others you should ask the schools you are evaluating are presented later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a radiologic tech does and the credentials and training choices that are offered.

Radiology Technician Occupation Description

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, they all have the identical primary job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many choose to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, such as mammography. They can practice in Hollister CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and also frequently evaluate its functionality and safety. They are additionally expected to retain complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Hollister CA medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degree Options

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, generally takes 18 months to two years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be appropriate also. One thing to bear in mind is that Hollister CA radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may typically be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which many schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification mandates in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an Radiologist program, based on the state where you will be working you may need to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many offer additional options for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, many Hollister CA employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it may enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Hollister 95023As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a substantial amount of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is often carried out in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Hollister CA home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often find that the online approach to learning is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online programs are generally more affordable than conventional options. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just make certain that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Radiographer Programs

After you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of looking for and assessing Hollister CA x-ray tech schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be an important variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when reviewing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of xray tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Hollister CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the California xray tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Hollister CA healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Hollister CA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Hollister CA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Hollister CA schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Hollister CA, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

Some Background on Hollister California

Hollister, California

Hollister is the county seat and largest city of San Benito County, California, United States. The population was 34,928 at the 2010 census. Hollister is primarily an agricultural town.

The Mutsun Ohlone Indians were the first known inhabitants of the Hollister region.

The town, then located in Monterey County, was founded November 19, 1868 when the San Justo Homestead Association purchased the property from William Welles Hollister (1818–1886). Undecided about a name for the new town, an association member, Napa vintner Henry Hagen, was tired of Saint and Spanish names in nearby towns and suggested the name Hollister. The City was incorporated on August 29, 1872. The western portion of San Benito County, including Hollister, was separated from Monterey County in 1874. The county was expanded eastward in 1887 to include portions taken from Merced and Fresno Counties.

Hollister is well-known among geologists because it portrays one of the best examples of aseismic creep anywhere in the world. The Calaveras Fault (a branch of the San Andreas Fault system) bisects the city north and south, roughly along Locust Ave. and Powell St. The streets running east/west across the fault have significant visible offsets. The fault runs directly under several houses. Even though they are visibly contorted the houses are still habitable as the owners have reinforced them to withstand the dislocation of their foundations. Although there was extensive damage in the town after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and the governor of California came to visit, this was due to a slip of the San Andreas Fault and was not related to the aseismic creep on the Calaveras Fault.

Hollister is one of at least three California towns to claim the title of "Earthquake Capital of the World" the other two being Coalinga and Parkfield.[6]
