No matter what the name, they all have the same major job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many elect to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, such as mammography. • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

  • Fluoroscopy

X-Ray Tech Degree Options

x-ray machine in Elberta ALThe primary requirement for enrolling in an x-ray tech school is to have attained a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally requires 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate as well. Something to consider is that Elberta AL radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can typically be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Alabama or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, based on the state where you will be practicing you may have to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many provide other alternatives for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Elberta AL employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it might improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

This is no different for online degree colleges. So while you can still earn your degree online, a significant portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is typically carried out in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Elberta AL residence. Plus online schools are generally more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Along with lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just be sure that the online school you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Radiographer Schools

When you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of finding and assessing Elberta AL x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be an important factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when comparing schools? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details before you make your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? Most radiology tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Elberta AL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the Alabama radiology technician programs you are evaluating have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Elberta AL medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Elberta AL healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Elberta AL home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Elberta AL schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Elberta AL, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
