And now that you have decided to enter the satisfying field of healthcare, just how do you go about choosing the right school and program to ensure that you will receive the appropriate training to become a skilled practitioner? And since most states do mandate that radiology techs become licensed, depending on where you ultimately work you may need training to pass a licensing examination. So it’s important that you research each of the colleges you are looking at in order to compare each program. A number of prospective students begin by looking for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and often gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while cost and location must be taken into consideration, there are additional critical qualifications also. For instance, you must ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internship programs. These inquiries and others you should ask the schools you are evaluating are provided later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a radiologic tech does and the credentials and education choices that are offered.

X-Ray Technician Occupation Description

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, they all have the identical principal job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many choose to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for example mammography. They can work in Red Rock AZ clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and routinely evaluate its performance and safety. They are also expected to keep detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Red Rock AZ health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degree Options

Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, generally requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more extensive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be appropriate as well. Something to consider is that Red Rock AZ radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Arizona or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an Radiologist school, based on the state where you will be employed you may need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several offer additional alternatives for testing also. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, many Red Rock AZ employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Degrees

attending x-ray tech school online in Red Rock 85245As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree programs. So although you can still earn your degree online, a considerable portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is typically provided in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Red Rock AZ home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online style of learning is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are generally cheaper than on-campus options. Along with reduced tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just make certain that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Radiographer Colleges

After you have decided on the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of finding and assessing Red Rock AZ x-ray technician schools. You will also have to decide if you want to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be relevant. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a material variable also. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when reviewing colleges? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these important details before you make your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Red Rock AZ employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the Arizona xray tech programs you are evaluating have associations with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Red Rock AZ health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Red Rock AZ healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Red Rock AZ home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Red Rock AZ schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the radiographer  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Red Rock AZ, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Become a Radiologic Technologist?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's a good idea to consider questions you could be asked. One of the questions that hiring managers often ask radiographer prospects is "What made you choose radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to discover is not only the private reasons you may have for becoming an Xray technician, but additionally what attributes and abilities you have that make you exceptional at your profession. You will probably be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, in addition to a certain number of standard interview questions, so you must prepare several approaches about how you want to answer them. Since there are so many variables that go into selecting a career, you can address this fundamental question in a variety of ways. When readying an answer, attempt to include the reasons the work interests you as well as the abilities you have that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the ideal candidate for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but jot down several ideas and anecdotes that relate to your own experiences and strengths. Reviewing sample answers can help you to develop your own thoughts, and give you ideas of what to include to enthuse the recruiter.

Some Background on Red Rock Arizona

Arizona State Route 179

State Route 179, also known as SR 179, the Red Rock Scenic Byway, a north–south state highway in Arizona, United States, running from Interstate 17 to SR 89A in Sedona. In 2006, the US Dept. of Transportation awarded SR 179 its highest designation within the National Scenic Byways Program: the All-American Road designation, due to the red rock and sandstone formations through which it travels along its 7.5-mile (12.1 km) length within the hills of the Coconino National Forest. The All-American Road designation also signifies to the travelling public that this is a road that is "a destination unto itself".

The southern terminus of SR 179 is at exit 298 off of I-17; the exit is about 15 miles (24 km) north of Camp Verde. SR 179 heads northwest from the interchange briefly before curving towards the north. It keeps this heading as it passes through the red rock area of the Village of Oak Creek on its way to Sedona, just a few miles north. As it enters the Sedona city limits, it roughly follows along the east bank of Oak Creek. It crosses the creek just before reaching its northern terminus at SR 89A.[1][2]

The original SR 179 was designated between 1935 and 1939 from SR 79 (now SR 89A) to SR 69 in Prescott Valley. By 1960, this route was cancelled, and SR 179 was designated on its current route.
