Phelan CA x-ray tech internship programCongratulations on your career choice to enroll in an x-ray tech school near Phelan CA in order to train to be a radiology technologist. But now that you have made a decision to enter the rewarding field of healthcare, just how do you go about picking the ideal school and program to ensure that you will receive the appropriate training to become a skilled professional? And since the majority of states do require that x-ray techs become licensed, based on where you subsequently work you might require training to pass a licensing test. So it’s essential that you research each of the colleges you are considering so that you can evaluate each program. Most prospective students start by looking for technical schools or colleges that are within driving distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and usually settle on the most affordable cost. But while expense and location must be considered, there are other significant qualifiers as well. For instance, you should find out if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internships. These inquiries and others you must ask the colleges you are considering are provided later in this article. But first, let’s explore what a radiologic technician does and the credentials and education options that are available.

Radiology Tech Job Summary

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the same principal job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many opt to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for example mammography. They can work in Phelan CA clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment and also routinely analyze its performance and safety. They are also required to retain in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Phelan CA medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Technician Degrees

x-ray machine in Phelan CAThe primary prerequisite for enrolling in a radiology tech college is to have earned a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, generally takes 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be acceptable also. One thing to consider is that Phelan CA radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can frequently be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in California or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, depending on the state where you will be working you might need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so check with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but a number offer other alternatives for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Phelan CA employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technician Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Phelan 92329As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a significant portion of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is often conducted in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Phelan CA residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically find that the online style of learning is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than traditional options. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just make certain that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask X Ray Tech Programs

As soon as you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of looking for and evaluating Phelan CA x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to determine if you want to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be an important variable also. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of radiology tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Phelan CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the California xray tech schools you are interested in have relationships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Phelan CA medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the radiographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Phelan CA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Phelan CA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Phelan CA colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Phelan CA, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
